Is Wii really just an 'impulse buy'?

"Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else," said David Karraker, SCEA's senior director of corporate communication, suggesting PS3 and Wii shouldn't be considered in the same category.

Do you agree with that statement?

So according to David Karraker the Wii's success is only temporary?

This can go either way, I have a nintendo Wii and a PS3, the Wii got old fast, I haven't played it in a month or so, so it could just be a impulse buy. On the other hand, all the people who are giant nintendo fans will get the system for sure and probley won't consider the PS3 because they are nintendo fans. Nintendo had a good idea to design a different way of game play, but they can only do so much with the controllers and then everything will just be the same, they are already making a game where I'm pretty sure you can't even use the "Wiimote" to play the game. Not sure if this is correct or not, but what I am hearing is for the new Super smash Brothers Brawl you will use a gamecube controller or a classic controller to play the game and not the "Wiimote", so this can prove that the Wii is just a impulse buy. The main downfall of the Wii though is the graphics, they look about the same as the gamecube which isn't a great thing. Everyone likes to see better graphics, if the Wii could of had better graphics and the new gameplay then it would of been better, but since they didn't really do anything with the graphics most people are gonna go for a PS3 (or that other system that doesn't deserve to be mentioned) so they can have the better graphics.

nintendo tried to do the regular console thing last time with the gamecube. it was the same type of machine as the ps2 and xbox but it came in third. Now they have decided to try this approach and i do think it is an impulse buy. If nintendo tried the graphics thing they would end up smack in third, but i feel in the long run they might end up their anyway

Mine wasn't, I thought about it and for the price you can't beat it. Sure it doesn't have any HD games yet, but it can support 720p output, it is just a matter of time before the games that support it come out.

The control is so much better than anything short of a miltary simulator, the only games I still question on the Wii are racing games, because of the contorler, you tilt the remote side to side to steer, which is not that bad, but it is not attached to anything you don't really have any resistance or "feel".

i agree completely, the wii is a total impulse buy just like the game cube. people dont realize it because there "nintendo fans" and want to believe that it is the best system ever...yea thats bullshit. i'll even admit that ps2 was an impulse buy. the graphics weren't a whole lot better then ps1 and the games didn't start getting good tell last year. Playstation 3 shows everyone what gaming is all about. The graphics, online and of course the games are going to blow everyone away. i would never buy wii unless i was 4 and didnt have eyes.

wii is a impulse buy definitely. they are going to buy it just because they think it is cool with the whole controller thing and it seems virtual sort of. but once they see the graphics compared to the ps3, they will realize its crap.

I'll admit, that i was once interested in buying a wii. I was going to buy a new HDTV, a ps3, and a wii. but, after much thought i concluded that the wii shouldnt be on my agenda right now, with an invincible system out there like the ps3 out there, the wii isnt the best choice. although the technology was innovative, the ps3 still remains the better choice. i am not planing on getting a 47" sony HDTV and a ps3, which i am happy about. it is expected in march http://www.ps3chat.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

yeah, I have a Wii. The only games that are any good as of right now are Zelda and Wii sports. My PS3 puts it to shame.

^ Yea, I got a Wii too.

The only reason I wanted one was to try something different. I have Zelda, Wii Sports and Wii Play. Play and Sports were fun for about an hour, but after that...

Zelda is OK. I have just checked my save data and I have played 12hr38min...the last time I played was 10th January, and I got it for Christmas...so that time is pretty pathetic.

It was pretty much an impulse buy (well, christmas present!) that I really wanted at the time but...pff. The sooner I get a PS3 the better...or rather, the sooner it becomes next friday...THE BETTER! [FFXII EU Launch!]

Yup it's impulse alright. Give it 12 months when games developers have ran out of ideas. All that will be left are ports of PS3 and 360 games, albeit with far worse graphics.

I have both Wii and PS3, I found that the Wii is more of a party game system. When I have guests over, the Wii have always been a party favorite. On the other hand, when I am by myself or with a good friend, we typically turn on the PS3 and duel it out in Fight Night, Call of Duty, or Resistence. I think Wii definately wins on innovation and playability, but as far as the raw graphics and content, I will give it to PS3 all the way.
