It doesn't necessarily mean that 720p is better than 1080p. Both have their pros and cons and one of the cons of larger resolutions is that it puts more pressure on the video card and therefore delivers less fps. Keep in mind that you wont notice a poor frame rate until it drops below about 30fps and I'm sure that games that are 1080p compatible will be capable of 30fps+.
For the most part 1080p wont be coded into games...at least not in the near future. HDTVs represent a small proportion of the market at the moment, and 1080p has the smallest portion of that small market share. 720p and 1080i will remain the standard of HD until at least 2010, if not for the rest of this gen so buying a 1080p tv is a bit stupid right now. A better idea would be to buy a 720p or a cheap 1080i now and wait for 1080p to become more widespread. By that time, decent 1080p tvs will have come down in price, and Plasma and LCD technology will have caught up more in terms of quality with CRT.
so far i have read alot of stuff on HDTV's tooo much actually but even though i said i am getting lcd it seems that plasma is better but the only reason i dont want to get plasma is because if that burn effect. then i hear that lcd's are best for gaming and thats the main reason iam getting it for my PS3. thanks for the info for the one that stayed on the topic ill post the name of the hdtv before i get it and see if anyone has that one.
So what is the best HDTV... The best for a cheap price that is!

Anyone who says Plasma is better than LCD or LCD is better than Plasma is either a) a liar or b) clueless.
Both technologies have strengths and weaknesses. There are areas they excel at and those they phail at.
Pros:
LCD:
1) Is best for smaller televisions below 30"
2) Has a better average viewing angle
3) LCD tv's do not suffer from screen burn
4) LCD tv's weigh less
5) LCD tv's are resilient and durable
6) In real life situations with a decent amount of ambient light LCD tv's will generally have better brightness and contrast than Plasma
Plasma:
1) Plasma TV's are better for larger TV sets and the smallest ones are only around 32"
2) Plasma TV's match CRT in terms of refresh rates and rapid movements
3) Plasma TV's have a life span of around 6 years of continuous viewing
4) Plasma TV's giver better contrast and brightness in dark conditions
