I am looking into getting a PS3 and one of the best advantages is the Blu-Ray disc player. But I am trying to figure out how I would hook it up to my home theater system to make sure I get the best picture, but also the best sound possible.

Besides the HDMI cable, is there an output on the system for a digital sound output? Correct me if I am wrong, but the normal audio cables, red & white, do not send a digital signal compatible for DTS.....

Well your ps3 has OPTICAL out(with laser) So you need a home theater with OPTICAL in to play in these formats.

The PS3 has an optical out that sends a DTS signal, that’s what I use. I also hear that you can now get top of the range amps that use the HDMI cable, which is supposed to be better than optical.

Not sure how that would work though, if the amp would then have a HDMI output that carries on to the TV or if that type of amp would be no good for a ps3 and would need the player with a duel HDMI output.

You get 2 channel with AV, 5.1 with optical and up to 7.1 with HDMI according to the manual. Depends on the system set up you've got though, as there's some 7.1 outputs that aren't supported, again, according to the manual.

That's another thing on my list of to-do's...get a decent amp. All well and good playing the PS3's sounds through my 2 stereos, but still can't do anything more than Virtual Surround

i have a pioneer HDMI amp (vsx 1016) it has 2 hdmi ins one for my sky hd the other for my PS3, however i still need to use optical out cables in tandem with the hdmi cables as there are actually 2 forms of hdmi i think there are called 1.1 and 1.3 its only the 1.3 that supports full digital audio aswell as digital video (picture) i am not sure if there are any AV receivers on the market that support full 1.3 i think there to come so even with a HDMI amp you would still need optical leads
