PS3 As a CD/DVD Player

My CD/DVD player has broken, so I'm looking for a replacement. I want something of decent quality that'll last, rather than something I'll ditch after a year or two, so that led me to look at Blu-Ray.

I've read that the PS3 is one of the best Blu-Ray players, and obviously I know it's great for gaming, but how does it perform as a CD/DVD player?
  • How does the DVD upscaling compare to a dedicated DVD player? I have a 1080i LCD TV.
  • How long does it take to turn on, if I want to play a CD?
  • Does it have a standard headphone socket? (My friend's XBOX doesn't.)
  • Is it quiet in operation? My laptop's DVD drive makes a lot of noise when I play a CD.
  • Would I have to turn on the TV just to play a CD, or could I just put it in and press a button?
  • My TV has one HDMI socket, already in use, so I'm thinking I would need an HDMI switch box. Is anyone aware of any problems with that solution?

One more thing - is it region-free for DVDs? And for Blu-Ray too, if that nonsense still applies.

That's a lot of concerns you have for a CD/DVD Player

It does everything most do, except for back flips
