PlayStation 3 in Europe Part 2: What Games Are On Offer?
Posted: 04-20-2007, 06:44 PM

Welcome back to Part 2 of PS3 Chat’s look at what is on offer here in Europe for your PlayStation 3 right now. Last week we took a look at some high quality games, such as Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm and Virtua Fighter 5, but that is not to say the weakest were reserved for last! Grab your purses and wallets, check out the games below and get ready to make some worthy purchases…

NHL 2K7
Although Britain is sometimes so very cold, getting conditions icy enough to warrant playing Ice Hockey is unlikely. Therefore, the sport has never particularly taken off here like in the US and Canada. However, that has not stopped companies supplying us with a plethora of games related to the sport. In this 2007 edition you can play your style of hockey at both ends of the ice rink whilst changing the coaching tactics on the fly to ensure everything runs smoothly without interruptions to the authentic NHL match action. You can control the offensive flow by effortlessly crashing the net, screening the goalie or pinching your defensemen, or counter an attack by clearing out the crease, setting up a break out for an offensive rush or clearing the zone. Throw in a robust franchise mode and you have one heck of a package.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sega’s mascot is back using rag-doll physics, light scatter and environmental blur effects that bring the whole world of Sonic to life in a way never seen before. This offering has three playable characters on offer, (Sonic, Shadow and Silver) each bringing a new approach to the game as you work your way through an epic, free-roaming and high speed adventure with a rich storyline that spans ten mission stages packed full of intense action and spanning new areas as well as some classics. Set for the first time in the human world, Sonic must rescue Queen Elise of Soleanna, the city of water, as none other than Dr. Eggman (aka Robotnik) has captured her. Not only can you customise and personalise your abilities along the way, but also there are multiplayer modes included where you can either play through a co-operative mode or battle against friends.

World Snooker Championship 2007
For all you snooker aficionados out there Sega has a treat for you as this game features thirty two out of ninety six licensed snooker players and fourteen out of sixty four pool players, including Shaun Murphy, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Efren Reyes. Sporting a fully 3D front-end, it incorporates five different championship modes; Snooker, Pool (9- and 8-ball), Hybrid (customised Snooker / Pool tours), Golden Cue (challenging former champions in both Snooker and Pool), and Trick Shot. With commentary from the likes of John Virgo, Steve Davis and John Parrot, plus online gameplay in Snooker, 8- and 9-ball Pool, Free Snooker and Free Pool, the action at the Crucible is hotter than ever before. On top of this there is a Character Creation system, new gameplay mechanics (including a Cue-ball Target Indicator), extra game modes for multiplayer (Versus, Quickplay, Billiards and Bar Billiards) and coaching for all game modes.

Full Auto 2: Battlelines
This is not just about high-speed racing, this is about heavy weaponry, strong armour and destructible urban street environments! Yes, Full Auto is back and with a bang on the PS3, complete with fierce combat racing that requires destruction to win races, leaving mass devastation in your wake and strategically working your way to victory as opponents are caught up in the chaos you left behind. The successor to the award-winning original introduces a new Arena Mode that features team play and six different levels, each specifically designed for a unique type of multiplayer combat. There are twenty-five vehicles on offer (all of which can have extra weapons added to them from a range of more than twenty options), over twenty race tracks and a new multi-path single player campaign where you must conquer six different districts and take control of opponent cars and weapons. Finally, there are six carnage-filled multiplayer modes that will satiate anyone’s appetite, with a selection on offer that ranges from classic death matches to unique base assaults and gladiator-style gameplay…

Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight
Whilst massive in Japan, sadly the Gundam series has yet to set the charts alight in Europe, but this latest game deserves your attention as you play through a futuristic war, commanding a Mobile Suit squadron for either the Earth Federation Force or The Zeon Forces, ordering them to attack, halt, gather, scatter, dash to front, barrage and much more. Each body part of the mobile suits has its own unique durability, so you can choose to target hands, arms, legs and heads depending on wherever you feel like hitting during the various missions you are faced with. Upon completion of objectives, you can claim achievement points that can then be used to strategically upgrade and customise your mobile suit, which will help no end as you enter the battlefield on a regular basis.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent
The Tom Clancy franchise has expanded considerably over recent years and this latest outing for Sam Fisher, Double Agent, forms part of the Splinter Cell slant, coming with a branching storyline where you play both sides and decide between opposing NSA and terrorists objectives. You must choose which priorities to support and which should be undermined, with your actions affecting how the story plays out and what ending you receive overall. Relentless tension awaits you as you lie, kill, sabotage and betray, all for the sake of protecting the innocent. There are upgradeable weapons and gadgets to help you keep your cover and gain the trust of the enemy in scenarios that are based on the testimonies of actual undercover agents, adding a greater sense of realism to the events. Kill too many terrorists and you will look too suspicious, but if you take the easier route it could lead to millions dying. This really is stomach churning action, as you must conduct certain missions underwater, amidst ice floes and even in blinding sandstorms…Plus there are exclusive PS3 multiplayer missions, complete with new innovations – get recruited and earn rank upgrades, then sabotage and spy for your team in this exhilarating experience.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Working its way over to the PS3 is Activision’s latest game based on the Marvel Comics universe, which comes with a combined cast of over 140 characters. Super Heroes can now fight whilst they are airborne, on the ground or even when submerged underwater as they work through the action RPG’s seventeen locations spread throughout a storyline where players not only determine the fate of Earth, but the Marvel world itself – how you interact with others during the game will definitely impact on the final outcome, so be careful what you do! Creating your own four-character team from a choice of twenty heroes that include big names such as Spider-man, Captain America, Elektra and Wolverine, you will face-off against numerous villains like Dr. Doom and Galactus. But that is not before selecting your team name, icon and vehicle, and proceeding to build up a strong reputation and balancing the development of separate characters. And to keep you even more entertained, there is an on- and offline co-operative story mode, plus a competitive feature to compare statistics the more you play.

Tony Hawk’s Project 8
Just when you were wondering how many versions there have been of Tony Hawk’s skating series, Project 8 comes along to remind you with its self-explanatory name. This edition has a new bail mode that allows players to control the body of the skater during falls to minimise or maximise damage for fun whilst exploring a massive living city that is full of interactive pedestrians that have all-new Artificial Intelligence. There is an enhanced physics engine and an ultra responsive control system for a greater sense of momentum and gravity, plus more ramps and rails throughout the city. The PS3 edition has been built from the ground-up to simulate the art of skateboarding as accurately as possible, whilst mixing in the treacherous trick-based gameplay that has become a staple of the series. Prepare to feel like a true skater…

Fight Night Round 3
Want to feel the realism of boxing? Then look no further than EA’s PS3 edition of the latest Fight Night game. This time the action is taken outside of the ring as gamers can establish rivalries through pre-fight events such as heated Press Conferences and fights at weigh-ins. What is fantastic about Fight Night is how it has film quality visuals, allowing you to rely on the detailed facial expressions and body language to gauge an opponent’s health and energy, creating a shocking sense of immersion and an electrifying atmosphere. There are three new Impact Punches that come with high risk yet high reward, meaning if pulled off with precision accuracy the entire dynamic of the fight can be changed with just one single punch. Wrapping the package off, you can watch ESPN Classic footage of real fights and even pit yourself against real-life opponents in the online arena.

Def Jam: Icon
Music is definitely your weapon as EA teams up with Def Jam Interactive for ‘Icon’. Beats trigger interactive hazards around you as your surroundings come blasting to life, reacting to the music. Exploding petrol pumps and spinning helicopter blades are just a couple of examples of what can be used against opponents with the correct timing. Using the analogue sticks like turntables, you can add beats, switch songs and make music your ally, taking control of the beats to sway the outcome of fights, whilst building yourself up into a true Hip Hop Icon in the story mode. An empire and the life of a music mogul are not far away, with you eventually able to sign artists, manage their careers and release hit records. Big Boi, Ludacris and The Game are just a few of the well known names included that can be fought alongside or against and there is even an online mode so you can battle against friends across the country for the ultimate Hip Hop showdown…

Need for Speed: Carbon
Once again EA is on hand with another upgrade of a current generation title as Need for Speed: Carbon hits PS3 with all-new Canyon Duel and Drift Race modes included as part of the ‘control the city’ racing game. The story sees you battling for ownership of the city, which is helped along by a self-built crew that watch your back and guide you in races (each member has a different skill available). There are blockers that cause distractions for opponents, scouts that uncover shortcuts around tracks and even ones that help give you a speed boost. Customise your vehicle (from a choice of over fifty real world licensed cars), avoid police in heated speed chases and take part in numerous styles of racing as you attempt to usurp other crew leaders and become king of the streets.

NBA Street Homecourt
Arriving after NBA Street V3, the series returns with a brand new animation engine and control system to let you once again develop your own style of basketball play, creating hundreds of tricks on the fly. You can soar through the air to execute gravity-defying dunks, pull off double dunks or even step off the back of a teammate for a jump-off dunk! Features this time include a Trick Remixer that allows stunning combination moves to be unleashed; the return of the Game Breaker that raises the game by letting loose crazy tricks; Master Skills that can unlocked as your creation from the Create A Player mode develops over time; and even online play, again with your created player. But that is not all, as EA has crammed in six famous Women’s NBA stars, including Sue Bird and Sheryl Swoopes!

The Godfather: Don’s Edition
EA has already had great success with the game version of the classic film The Godfather, but felt that neither the Wii nor PlayStation 3 should miss out, hence this special ‘Don’s Edition’ has been brought to Sony’s system, making good use of the Sixaxis to allow you to manhandle people in a more realistic fashion. Use the power of loyalty and fear to command respect, interact with anyone around you; use EA’s ‘MobFace’ to create your own new members of the Corleone family and inevitably take control of New York in this updated edition. You can follow the path of Enforcer or Operator, each one having its own unique perks and abilities that can be earned as you work up from simple street soldier to ‘Don’ status. Take down two rival Families and execute five new contracts, plus explore and exploit the two new hubs – Shipyard and Rail Yard on your way to becoming head of La Cosa Nostra!

So there you have it, the entire line-up of PlayStation 3 games that is currently on offer here in Europe. See something you fancy? Surely you must do with such stellar games lurking amongst the list! Be sure to stick with PS3 Chat as we next take a look at some of the most interesting games on the horizon…

So what have people been buying in general? I know it seems that from the general charts Resistance and MotorStorm have been big hitters, but what about the rest of the launch games - what's been picked up?
