PS3 Wireless File Sharing.. Help Please

Ok so I set up my Wireless Router last night, got my Ps3 all hooked up, connection is good, signal strength is 95%..

Now I was reading in my router guide that I can share files between my desktop and another computer (Im assuming this can be a PS3). Im wanting to know if I can shoot files to my PS3 via my wireless connection, and lets say, watch movies on my TV that are currently on my Desktop's hard-drive..

Is this possible? And does it go the same for music and picture files?

If so, ho do I go about accessing these files from the PS3? I have put a list of folders on my "shared folders" list on my router configuration.

Any help would be great..

Thanks

I'm not too sure if you can wirelessly send files your PS3. But there are quick ways of getting files from your comp. to your PS3. First, if you have the 60gig version, you can use a memory card and transfer files that way. Or, I think you can burn a disc and just copy all the info too. PSP transfers also work via USB.

While the PS3 has been touted as a "computer" you have to install a distro of Linux to actually have it be a compter. Maybe with linux you can wirelessly share but I know that more physical medium are a lot faster.

JJJ, you can't easily share files over the network between 2 different operating systems. So in other words, you computer is running on Windows and the PS3 is a running on a proprietary Sony OS (XMB), and they cannot talk to each other. However, you may share files between the PS3 and your computer over the network by installing a true computer operating system on it. You have the option to install many flavors of Linux on the PS3, and with third party software support, you will be able to communicate between the PS3 (via Linux) and your PC.

Another approach you can try is to enable IIS (assuming you have at least Windows 2000 professional) on your PC and start a FTP or HTTP server on it, then you must configure a shared network folder on your PC. Since both the PS3 and the PC support TCP/IP protocol, once you have set up a web server on your PC, then you can use your PS3's browser and navigate to that local web server on your PC and download files off of it, but if you don't know what you are doing, you should probably stay away from both of these methods and stick with the USB flash drives.

Thanks

I have one other question then..

I have a 300GB External HD, that might be able to connect to the ps3 via a USB port. SO if I have movies on the portable HD, plug it into the ps3, will I be able to open the files on the HD with my ps3? Including movie files?

Im trying to avoid having to burn movies, and rather just have them on my HD and move it to my ps3.

You can check your hard drive, just plug it via USB, go to your PS3 video icon, select your drive and press the triangle button to view all of your folders. As for the actual movies, it depends on the format. Most mpegs should work, but seeing as how most movies are avi, wmv, or use some other codec, the PS3 cannot play those. It's best that you use a portable drive rather than burning a DVD and finding out that you wasted your time (and maybe even a disc) on something that the PS3 doesn't support.

JJJ, first thing you want to make sure is that your HDD is formatted as a FAT32 disk, PS3 will not recognize NTFS disks... Second, like Charlie said, make sure you have the correct format for your movie files. Another thing you may want to be aware of is that FAT32 disks have a 4 GB file limit, in other words, you cannot store a single file larger than 4 GB on the disk, so watch out for the size when you rip that DVD.

WiFi on the PS3 is pretty simple to setup... The process is somewhat similar to the Wii.
