PS3Chat Folding@home Team
Sponsored Links
If you're interested, here's a rundown of what you need to join:Update your PS3 firmware to 1.6 or above. The easiest way is to go to Settings -> System Update -> Update via Internet. You can also download the latest firmware to a storage device and then update through it, but you need to be online in order to get Folding@home. Once you're updated, the Folding@home icon will be added to the Network portion of the XMB. Start it up and it'll download and install the program to your PS3. When you have Folding@home up and running, press Triangle to open up OPTIONS -> Identity. From there, you can Change Donor Name from the default PS3 to something unique. From the Identity tab, you can also Join an Existing Team. In order to join the PS3 Chat team, you'll need to input the team number, 57434. Now leave your PS3 on while it folds proteins in order to find the cure to cancer and other diseases. Okay, I created the team. Just enter the number 57434 for the PS3chat team. It seems like their stats server is down at the moment (too many PS3s?) so I'm not sure how well it'll work.

I entred the numerical digits earlier, but it didn't actually say that I had joined a group. Does it just mean that all our PS3's combine to tackle one disease?

When you press Select, it switches the view, showing you some status. It should have,
DONOR Name _____ Team 57434 Completed __ Work Units As long as you joined the team, it'll change from 0 to 57434 which means you've joined the PS3 Chat team. You can also check your stats over at OPTIONS -> Information -> My Statistics or My Team Statistics. |

Protein folding, curing cancer?
I can guarantee you this will not find a cure for cancer. Even if a "cure" is found by this program, it has to be tested in real-life, hello. That means chemical modeling, animal testing, clinical trials, companies fighting over the rights to it, maybe even buying "the cure" and deep sixing it. Kinda like they did with the EV1, any electric cars anywhere? I mean ALL electric.
No money in a cure. Therefore, no cure. Oh yeah, I'm a nurse. BTW, each cancer is genetically different, depending on the type of cancer, and even then, different genetically from person to person. Ask an oncologist, or a genetecist. |

Hitler...er I mean dantheman, folding@home doesn't cure cancer. All it does is try to understand why proteins fold in the way that they do. Scientists don't know why proteins fold but when they fold in the wrong way they can cause stuff like MS. By putting together the collective processing power of computers world wide, scientists are able to work on these problems hundreds and hundreds of times faster than if they just used their own computers.
If scientists can understand how and why the proteins fold, they can then work out how to make them fold the correct way, thereby curing diseases. I win, you lose. |
