Networking The Ps3

Hi Guys,

I have just got a PS3 and I want to set it up so I can go on the internet and online with it.

Now heres my problem. The modem I have does not have a space for the cable to go in from the back of the PS3.

What I want to know is... Can I not connect the Ps3 to the computer and then it will go thorugh the modem and connect that way??

I tried doing that but somehow its not working because it says the local area connection is not working on the computer but it does say internet connection enabled on the PS3.

Please Can someone help, thanks.

Carlos

no i dont think it works like that, the ethernet cable has to be connected to the modem some how whether it be directly to it or to a wireless router (that being connected to the modem) but you can always disconnect your modem from your your computer whenever your playing online...

Get a wireless router with built in modem. This way you can still have a wired connection to your pc and yet have wireless connection to you PS3. This is what I did and it works great. I can now also play online games on my PSP while I'm in bed as well

Cool, So say if I buy a wireless connection modem from ebay or something, it doesn't mean I have to change all my internet service does it?

No, the only thing that will change is the way you log on. You will also need an ethernet card in your PC otherwise your router will not be able to connect to your pc as the modem you currently have will no longer be used. If you do decide to go with this option you need a wireless router and it needs to have a built in modem.

It's not, it's just the way I seem to make things confusing by going round the block twice lol

Simply put, the wireless router replaces your modem. It allows any wireless device within a given range access to the internet. If your pc isn't wireless you can still have a wired connection through it to the internet and this is what i've done. There are 2 types, ADSL and Cable. You need to determine what type you use for your internet at home and then buy the corresponding router. You do not need to change ISP or anything else, your log on details all stay the same

(P.S You don't NEED a wireless router, you could get a standard one but wireless makes things a lot easier if your PS3 and PC aren't near a phone line, it saves having to trail loads of long extension cables all around the house lol)

I'm not certain what country you're from so I can only go by UK prices. I bought mine from PC World for £59.99 It's a Belkin ADSL2 wireless router with built in modem. I also don't use eBay but since you can get virtually anything from there I would think you would be able to get one without too much fuss. Just make sure that you have an ethernet card in your pc before you spend good money on a router because it'll be useless if you haven't .
