Personally i 'turn off system' right from in the game.

For the first week of ownership i made sure i duly exited the game before powering down though

If you do the PS button thing to turn off the machine it automatically turns the controller off as well, no need to do it separately.

In answer to sprint's original question. I use the PS button to quit the game, then again to turn the system off from the home menu. When I turn the system back on I always use the PS button, never the power button on the console. The only time I touch the machine itself is when I'm ejecting a disc.

i don't even touch the machine to eject a disk, I got the remote with the console. There's no chance of getting finger prints all over the shiny surface

And yeah, PS button for me too. Seems like the best way.

Yes indeed, i know that. What i was trying to say is that this option is useful for like when your playing resistance with a friend and then you just want to play alone. Not like xbox that, until now, the only way my friend knows how to turn it off is by taking the bateries out

Yes it is, but also is throwing the controller against a wall. Anyway thats not the point! it should have another way of turning it off, a more civilized way!

Even my battery toy cars back in the 80's had an ON/OFF switch

But you don't need to take the batteries out. You can just hold the guide button, and a menu will come up where you can choose shut off controller.
