How your Playstation 3 was made
Original thread in Chinese by its starter sakatsuku
http://bbs.a9vg.com/read.php?tid=718953&fpage=1
Photos taken inside Playstation 3's China manufacturing base (by Asus) , please excuse me for the image quality because they were taken by a cellphone.
Playstation3's case is made of some semi-transparent material, you can see through it if viewed against the light.

The manufacture cost for a Playstation 3 is around 800 US dollars. The thread starter asked about the chief production line supervisor and he revealed the price for the mainboard alone is about 300 US dollars.

The Blu-ray drive costs around 130 USD, when reading DVD/CD it gives out a red beam of light in contrast to the case in which the laser ray is blue when reading Blu-ray disks.

Each unit of PS3, prior to leave the factory, must pass a stability torture test. By reading a super expensive DEMO disk (12,000 USD), this test gives the PS3 CELL RSX a busy time and makes sure everything is ok. If everything passes ok, you would see the PASS on one of the monitors.

The heat dispatching gel is also very expensive, each tube only 100ml costs around 80 USD. If the torture test is carried out without the proper use of this gel, within two hours, your PS3 would be smoked, or worse, burnt.

like 20% of its overall components are made in Japan while the rest 80% are made in China.

Not every fresh PS3 meets the requirement, a small portion of the consoles had to be returned to the factory prior to its release because of certain flaws. They would afterwards be sold as "NEW" products but they are guarantied to work just as fine as they are designed to.

It takes about 15 minutes to assemble a single Playstation 3.

My point is certainly not to enlighten people but to share information with them.

Fair enough... Thought you were making some stand against the ill treatment of Chinese workers or the crap quality of the PS3 or something, but sharing info is always good.

Nah, I just did a translation. like I stated in the beginning, the original version is in a Chinese Playstation 3 forum by the member Sakatsuku who works for Asus and had the access to the factory. This thread is designed to be neutral.
To hell with politics, I just need my joypad. ;)

Yes they are loosing money, they see profits on the long run (games, accesories, market share of the blu ray format, blu ray movies, PSN downloads, etc)

The theory is that if Sony lowers the cost and sells them at a loss, more people will buy them. This makes their install base grow faster initially.
1 year install base: 10 million (PS2 managed 12 which was the best ever afaik)
As the cost of manufacture comes down, they will start making money on the product and can eventually offer a price cut from their already under priced product. Their install base continues to grow.
2 year install base: 30 million
They now have 30 million people with their console, way beyond that of their competitors who are on 15 million. As a result, devs make more games for their system and they take a small percentage of profit from sales. They also release 1st party games that 5-6million people buy and they get a large percentage of that profit.
3 year install base: 50million
With a larger install base came more games, with more games comes a larger install base and so on. By now, they're selling their console at a profit and at a low price but they made back the money they initially lost in the first year in the second year anyway so everything they make now is a bonus.
Thats basically it. Problems occur though when your under priced console still costs over twice as much as your competitors.
