where has all the space gone?

ok i downloaded the newest update and some demos...but remind you the demos i downloaded were 800MB at the most....i don't have anything else but saved game files and not too many at all and i looked and they are only a couple hundred MB....so i looked at my free space remaining and it says only 35GB. so where did it all go??
do these updates take a lot of room or is my hard drive just dwindling away as we speak...i don't have no movies or songs or anything like that on my system..just the new update and game saves and a few small demos?

and how many MB are in a GB? isn't it like a million?

dont forget the OS will take up some space too......i'm sitting at about 29-28 free space left.......but I have a ton of videos and demos I can delete to free up space when it comes to it......also I plan to get an external HD, or by that time sony will have a bigger HD to replace the one I have......like the new 80gig or bigger.....

What games do you have for your PS3? This will have an effect on free hard drive space, not just for your saves but some games also install parts of the game/ system data onto the hard drive, perhaps to reduce load times. In some cases, your game may have installed several gigabytes of data onto the hard drive for this.

Ridge Racer 7 could install about 4 or 5 GB, so does Oblivion. Virtua Fighter 5's game data is a bit over 2GB, for example

Is this perhaps where some of your hard drive space is going?

Mmm, i only have Motorstorm at the moment so thats not really the issue. I just checked and apparently i have 45Gb left, i have downloaded demos and deleted some, but a lot of space i think has gone just because of that. oh well I'll live cant wait for IV

how do you delete the oblivion data...because someday i'm not going to play that game and i will want to erase that stuff to free up some room....and there is only 1000 MB in one GB...that sucks

yeah they set aside 5 gigs for that...that is why if you look at your system info it says like for me 35gig/55gigs

so the os that is runs on already has 5 gigs set aside for that fyi lol
but thanks for all the insite i was getting worried that the updates where like freaking huge...like 5 or 6 gigs per update that wouldn't be good lol

if you want a bigger hard drive try this:

on the side of the ps3, there is a small plate that you can pry out with a screwdriver

after doing this, there is one screw in the center to remove that will enable you to lift the small lever underneath

lift the lever, and slide the hard drive (and it's cage) to the right and pull it out

now remove the 4 screws on each corner to slide the hard drive out of it's cage

the hard drive is just a laptop hard drive in that cage. just slide the new hard drive into the cage and re-assamble the ps3. Note: be sure to format the drive and transfer the files before inserting it

Why not just buy an external HDD and plug it in via the usb connections?
