You don't save anything; where's the advantage in saving money on something that's useless to you? None, right?
In five years time (probably less), when the HD player market actually establishes itself, if precedent is any indication, both formats (HD-DVD and blu-ray) will be in use (like DVD+R and -R today), and when that happens, you'll probably be able to get combo players for $300 -- so you see, there's no advantage to me or you owning blu-ray, only to Sony for getting their product out before Toshiba. So if you love Sony enough to pay to help them grab the HD player market, go right ahead, it's your money (but make no mistake; when you buy a PS3, that's what you're doing, cause half that $600 is for blu-ray). I won't, cause Sony isn't offering me anything to help them, and is even CHARGING me (and you) for it.
Hell, blu-ray should be included FREE if Sony wants to grab the market through gamers (which is why it's only $300 compared to $1000 right now, I suppose, but it's still too high for a game console, which is what PS3 is supposed to be about anyway...).
