Hey, I currently have a 40 GB PS3. I had a ps2 before and still have it, but planning on selling it. I was wondering if PS3 will come out with an installation update of some sort to where i can play ps2 games on the 40 GB PS3. Does anyone know of anything about this issue?

Highly doubt it. I'm pretty sure it's both hardware and software differences that allow the 80GB to play PS2 games, so unless you change the firmware and/or physically mod it, no, you can't.

Just keep your ps2, since they sell for like $100 new, and $50 used, which means you'll get like $20 for it.

^^^ Yea I would just keep the ps2. If you don't plan on playing those games then you should sell it. If you want to be able to play those games, I suggest you keep it. I still have my ps2. I just use it for a dvd player in my bedroom now. I have an 80g ps3. It was worth it.

well they are discontinuing the 80 GB if im not mistaken. So shoul they have to come up with an update of some sort for the 40 GB?

The reason the 40gb cant run PS2 games is that it has none of the original PS2 hardware in order to make it cheaper. The 80gb has the PS2 graphics card so it can run PS2 games fairly well by emulating the PS2 processor with software and the original 20 and 60 had both the PS2 graphics card and processor so it could play just about every PS2 gamer perfectly.

However in my opinion it couldn't be that hard to emulate the PS2 graphics card and Processor as the PS3 is so powerful but Sony have said they have no plans to do this as their resources are being used elsewhere (aka home etc).

Basically keep the PS2 for now. and play all the old gems on that in glorious standard definition lol

No they're not discontinuing the 80G. They did pull them off the shelves, but than realized the demand for that particular one was higher than they anticipated. They will be bringing it back very soon. I know they are even going to release the MGS bundle with an 80G console. So I repeat my previous statment, "It was worth it."
