RPGs similar? In some ways yes, in others no!
Are you serious? I think if you played a number of RPGs you would find they are compeltley different to be perfectly honest. Yes, the way you play the game might feel the same becuase of the simple fact it's "role playing" Maybe we have to see the definition of what that is before we can begin to understand. So what is a Role Playing Game? Personally, I like to define a Role Playing Game as a game that MUST, ABSOLUTELY have three elements. One is a statistical setup for characters that describe certain skills/aspects of that character. Two, it must have some method of increasing and strengthening those statistics (usually but not necessarily by way of the experience/level system). Three, it must have a menu-driven combat system that utilizes the skills/aspects of the characters. Given there are other elements of RPGs that I'll leave out because of their obvious nature, these are the elements that are required for a game to be labeled RPG. So, now you can look at games in the series of, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Elder Scrolls, Fallout and other games such as runescape, Guildwars, Dungeons and Dragons and ofcourse World of Warcraft. Some of these games are totally amazing.. yet are they the same? defiently not. I guess it's possible to link bits of the games and say, "oh look here he defeats the evil guy" but you could do that with any genre of games, e.g. In football games, look here he scores a goal.
If you're talking about the style an RPG is played then, yes maybe it's similar, but just of storyline?? no, definietly not the same. Maybe you should try out a few more. The Final Fantasy series i recommend highly. A new one is coming out on PS3 this year.
