Are All RPG's Based on "The Raiders of The.....

Today on SCI FI all of the Raiders of the Lost Ark show is on.

I've been playing Oblivion for months ( I have 4 characters going at one time...........it's a blast !!)

I've noticed allot of the traps are alike in Oblivion.

You guys know the games than I. Are all RPG's kinda the same ?

First of all, don't you mean the Indiana Jones series?

Second, no, not all RPG's are based on one movie.....?

Third, Indiana Jones is a swell guy.

You call him Dr. Jones

To the OP I see where your coming from. A lot of RPGs do consist of good guys (your player[s]) that may be alone or with a good or even the evil group, an evil group mostly an empire, a cooperation or cult of some type and an item of great power or just a great power. Now it always seems that the evil group wants the item/power or has it and the good guys either have it, know they need to get it first or have to get it away from the evil group. This isn't the absolute for every Rpg but it does describe a lot.

Many movies use this formula too.

^^^^True, but that plot scheme is so vague it doesn't even pertain specifically to Raiders of the Lost Ark. I could make the argument that every FPS copies off Rambo since there's guns and bullets and bad guys and you win.

RPGs similar? In some ways yes, in others no!

Are you serious? I think if you played a number of RPGs you would find they are compeltley different to be perfectly honest. Yes, the way you play the game might feel the same becuase of the simple fact it's "role playing" Maybe we have to see the definition of what that is before we can begin to understand. So what is a Role Playing Game? Personally, I like to define a Role Playing Game as a game that MUST, ABSOLUTELY have three elements. One is a statistical setup for characters that describe certain skills/aspects of that character. Two, it must have some method of increasing and strengthening those statistics (usually but not necessarily by way of the experience/level system). Three, it must have a menu-driven combat system that utilizes the skills/aspects of the characters. Given there are other elements of RPGs that I'll leave out because of their obvious nature, these are the elements that are required for a game to be labeled RPG. So, now you can look at games in the series of, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Elder Scrolls, Fallout and other games such as runescape, Guildwars, Dungeons and Dragons and ofcourse World of Warcraft. Some of these games are totally amazing.. yet are they the same? defiently not. I guess it's possible to link bits of the games and say, "oh look here he defeats the evil guy" but you could do that with any genre of games, e.g. In football games, look here he scores a goal.
If you're talking about the style an RPG is played then, yes maybe it's similar, but just of storyline?? no, definietly not the same. Maybe you should try out a few more. The Final Fantasy series i recommend highly. A new one is coming out on PS3 this year.

Well guys, enough of the Dr.Jones jokes, though that whip of his would be handy to have in a game, it could solve some problems in Tomb Raider. As to the second, HELL NO! Rpg's are not all like that! You don't have booby-traps in Final Fantasy, I never had to cross a chasm in Dragon's Quest with my trusty whip while dodging arrows from a wall. Just try some new Rpg's and see the diverse gaming world we have the pleasure of living in.
