Why has the PS3 launch been delayed?

Call me a sceptic, but is there more to this delay in launch than meets the eye?

With Christmas approaching, Sony will be able to shift a massive pile of PS2 Consoles as the PS3 will not be ready. They are then guaranteed more sales when the PS3 is launched.

A very good point indeed! Perhaps it is a ploy to shift all the ps2 stock that would otherwise have been left on the shelves of the stores. I feel sorry for parents as they are the ones who will feel the need to buy the ps2 for christams and then a few months later buy the ps3.

Wayne,

It always seems to happen this way. Either the delays push the launch date until after Christmas, or there are so few of the new Consoles around prior to Christmas that people end up buying the older version.

Strange how this happens?

Got to say though they are not the only one though. Most of them do exactly the same. Problem is there is nothing at all we can do about it as they know whenever and whatever price the dictate we will buy.

A good observation Fifa street - I had not thought of them trying to sell off the PS2 stock. It could backfire on them though as people may either buy another type of console (e.g. Nintendo DS lite) or PC games instead. My money would be on people shelling out on a new HD television!

I am going to shell out on an new HD TV. Although I would like to get the PS3 as soon as possible I have no children to please - only my wife and me. I can handle not having it for Christmas but the trick is getting old. I suspect people will not be falling for it too many more times.

I dread to think what the 'Buy it now' prices will be on eBay come December

Never mind the "Buy It Now" price, what do you reckon these auctions will reach when the bidding wars start.

I remember some of the prices from past launches, when it was difficult to get any stock around christmas time. While it is a free market, some of the prices were crazy!!

I think they will go at least triple the price for a console in an auction and can't see them being buy it now as that would be like throwing money away. I must keep an eye out and watch for the last 5 minutes say and see the price go soaring. Problem is as well is I wonder whether people will use it as a scam to get folks money when they don't have the stock in the first place. Never to be seen again?

I won't be paying out on eBay either, I will happily wait until they are freely available rather than get stung. I am not so much of a game-head that I have to have a new console the day it comes out.

Back on topic, the reason behind the delay is because of the Blu-Laser diodes. Yeah other companies have built heaps of Blu-Ray players but there are not many available (at least not in here Down Under). The diodes are not available in the quantity that SONY wants for PS3.
