Whats good&bad about the PS3 in comparison to other consoles?

Hey all, im planning on getting a PS3 when it releases here in Australia, but i wanted to first do some research on it.

Note: Im really not looking for the biased sony fanboy or any other console fanboy type of reply.

I basically want to find out whats good about the ps3, and whats bad.

Known problems, and etc.

Also i want your opinions on whether you thought the ps3 was worth your money or not, please be honest thanks

Edit: apologies if a similiar thread has already been created on this forum, i searched but didn't find anything.

Edit2: Also im curious if anybody has gotten bored of their ps3 already? if so, how long have you had it for and what games did u have for it? and why did u get bored of it if u know The reason for this is cause i have a Wii and its fun and all, but sometimes i dont play for weeks, maybe cause its a family console and i live by myself.

basically its a new system so they won't be utalizing its potential fully for a while now, and right now it don't have very many games but a lot of tittles are on their way shortly and thoughout the rest of this year. the main difference that i liked about it was the potential for the future games compaired with xbox360...the xbox uses 9gb disc and the ps3 are blue ray so they hold i think 54gb...but as of yet no game has really used the full potential of this. there is a lot more comparisons but i don't know the exacts so i'll let someone else explain it...i don't want to steer you in the wrong direction on facts....and to let you know i don't own a wii or an xbox360 or ps3...

PS3:

Pros: Great Graphics, Superior overall technology, Enormous amount of power buried within, Blu-ray support, HDMI, BD + DVD + CD playback, Integrated hard drive, customization options (such as swappable hard drive), Ability to install other operating systems on the system, free online play, motion sensing and rechargeable controller.

Cons: Not many software titles are available to date, high price, online features not as extensive as Xbox Live, no rumble (yet).

Xbox 360:

Now I don't own a 360 yet, so I am just going to list the stuff I know about the system, for the 360 owners, if I got something wrong or missed something, please correct me.

Pros: A huge library of great games including some great exclusive titles, great graphics, rumble in controller, cheaper than the PS3. Great media center feature that allows xBox to talk with your Windows based home PC. Great online features of xBox Live, DVD + CD playback.

Cons: No motion sensing technology, integrated hard drive not standard, wireless controller needs batteries, no HDMI output, more complex synchronization process of wireless controllers, uses DVD as game media, proprietary to Windows networked environment, no free online play, very limited customization options.

Wii:

Pros: Innovative use of the gyroscopic motion sensing technology, in my opinion, the sensors in the Wii is somewhat better than the ones in the PS3. Revolutionary ways of gaming, Games are easy to play for people of all ages. Great for parties, integrated WiFi for Internet access, Virtual Console for downloading of tons of old school games. Cheapest of all 3 consoles

Cons: Not many software titles are available to date. The material used to build the console feels very cheap, old technology, no DVD playback, no HD support (Wii does support ED or 480p through a component connection), controllers need batteries, no great third party support.

The PS3 has pros and cons, like any system-

Pros-
  • The hardware has tons of potential
  • Free online
  • 10 year lifecycle
  • Franchises you have come to love will get their day in the sun
  • Runs cool and quite
  • Blu-Ray
  • 1080p visuals\

Cons-
  • Online is lacking
  • Developers might not want to spend the time and money looking into better graphics
  • Expensive
  • Blu-Ray
  • Rips off the Wii controller to a degree

In various interviews with Phil Harrison (President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide) and former SCEA boss Kaz Hirai, they have stated that Sony will support the PS3 for 10 years. Meaning until 2016 (going by the American and Japanese launches), there will be a supply of new PS3 games. So while the cost might be expensive now, you'll have the system for a long time.

Look at the Xbox, that console only lasted for 4 years until the 360 came out....

It's very barebones. You can get online but the Store downloads are slow, there aren't as many premium options like Xbox LIVE (messaging friends to play with you, unified friends list, robust demo offerings, steady supply of arcade games like GripShift or flOw), and, like you said, not nearly as many people to play with.

This will change in time but right now things are not as good as they can be.

A problem would be the price of the games. $59.99 for the current library of games just isn't appealing. Especially considering how new PS2 games are going for $49.99-39.99, not to mention a huge selection of quality $19.99 Greatest Hits. While not exactly new-generation, Wii is only $49.99 which should be the standard, rather than the exception.

ya but you must remember ps3 uses the blur-ray disc, they hold so much more memory than the regular discs, that the wii, and xbox hold. so that is why they need to be more expensive. but i dont know why xbox has their games at the same price as ps3 does. the xbox games should be less expensive in my opinion. i think xbox users are getting ripped off.

Over here in ther UK, PS3 games (1st party) will retail for £39.99 (same as Wii) whilst 3rd party will retail for £49.99 (like xbox 360 games)

I think £39.99 is a good price really, considering how PS2 games are selling for £29.99

I remember reading somewhere that the PS3 is being sold at a super cheap price compared to what it should be. Something about the company losing like $200 per machine or something....

I do not see how that could be...I mean ya, it has a lot of tech to it, but still...$400-$600 for a machine, and they are losing money??

I am gonna wait till the price drops down, or until Final Fantasy XIII comes out

I like the Wii too.....you can get your exercise and play games at the same time!! I love the boxing game...hehe

^Considering that standalone Blu-Ray players are selling roughly around the £1000 price mark...PS3 has one built in...so they are losing a lot of money on this console.

I suppose we should be greatful!

There is more to the PS3 than that. Sony did a poor job at communicating what consumers were actually getting when they announced the price. Part of that problem isn't easily solved- people can't get past the sticker shock.

In all seriousness, what you get for what you pay for is astounding and the Blu-Ray player is just the icing on the cake.
