After hearing on the news this morning about people cancelling there PS3 orders and buying japanese and USA ones due to them being able to play PS2 games. Can someone advise me as mines doesnt play PS2 games and are the PS3 games definatly goind to be region free as they said its due to Sony changing software for the European versions
PS3 games will be region free whereas movies won't be.
The EU version of the PS3 is apparently less compatible with PS2 games due to the removal of its emotion engine chip. This is a chip that emulates the PS2 processor and has been removed to cut costs since Sony are losing money and over fist.
This isn't as bad as it sounds though, since emulation is now done in software, which means that over time, with subsequent firmware updates it will increase compatability. Also Sony have stated that at launch the EU PS3 will be able to play around 1000 PS2 games which isn't a bad start
