It does have limited compatibilty, have a look at this website.

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/

I downloaded the update and am able to play some of my ps2 games.Gran Turismo 3 plays fine, but GT4 throws up a message saying that the game is not supported at the moment,or words to that effect.Mtal gear solid 3 and Vice City seem to play ok as well.Cheers

Good Question, this just goes to show that Sony has put the next generation platform out on its own, with limited compatability playing the PS2 games. I personally have noticed a difference in sound and picture quality with ps3 far greater than ps2. So having said that why would we or sony want to keep the games from playstation 2 totally compatable anyway, then people will just settle on the playstation 2 and not worry about ps3, once they found out the games are to much compatable. I think Sony did the right thing and went all out and created the next generation givin the fact that i have said all of the above. Personally when it gets down to the nitty gritty PS2 has the limited compatability and PS3 is moving on and so am i.

Sony are working on the whole backwards combatability thing, For the Euro one i mean, well both actually but yeah they wanted to do the whole emulation thing, so im guess by firmware 1.8-2.0 u should be able to play all ps2 games perfectly, infact i guarantee, that by firmware 2.0, ull be able to not only play ALL old games but be able to upscale them as well, I remember i said it

What makes you so sure that Sony will make such progress in BC? Considering how the PS2 doesn't have 100% BC, that's very unlikely.

I have GTA San Andreas & Fifa 07 both working okay on mine. GTA does freeze for around a second or two randomly, but nothing that can't be tolerated for the time being.

They will work on resolving as many of these issues as possible (it's things like this that convinces people from upgrading, so it's essential they fix bugs with B/C) whether you can guarantee up-scaling though, remains to be seen

Because the PS2 didnt have firmware updates...what makes you so sure Sony cant fix it anyway, cuz im sure the PS3 is gonna stay the same for the next 5 years, NOPE Sony arent gonna come out with software upgrades for the FLAGSHIP console, nope they arent just gonna leave it the way it is....

Because Sony will be phasing out the PS2 titles. It's not cost-effective for Sony to focus on bringing old titles up to date rather than improve on the existing PS3 software. They'll probably add a few more BC updates, but it's not going to be a big improvement. Even with the Emotion Engine, the JP and NA consoles are not 100% BC. We've only received one update and that's for running HDD PS2 games.

That is too right. If i was running a buisness and wanted to make money i would definately think about the future of gaming as in this case. Sony has been the trend setter in this market for a very long time and there is no way that they will give that up for anything. I know that when i think of Sony, i automatically think of Playstation. Regards Grassy
