Sick of goblins and elves? Suprisingly so are Bethasda, the developer behind Oblivion. Next on the teams 'to do' list is a rebirth of Fallout, a classic PC RPG famed for it's grim atmosphere, Fallout 3 is set on earth, centuries after a nuclear holocaust: you've spent your childhood cooped up safely in a massive 'vault' along with other lucky folk, but now your dad has gone missing. And so, you have no choice but to head out into the wasteland to look for him.

The wasteland, as it's name implied, isn't a lot of laughs. The landscape is heavily irradiated and populated by mutated humans and animals. Towns of surviviors offer missions, safe havens and factions to fight or ally with. Player choice is key. Will you help the brotherhood of steel (see picture) eradicate the mutants? or will you side with slave traders, mercenaries, thieves and other outcasts? Maybe you'll make your own way, collection bounties and looting valauble goods from people you kill. As with oblivion, there are a vast number of paths to take.

Fallout 3 is playable in first-person perspective, or over-the-shoulder-third-person if you prefer, and combat is just like any first person shooter...at first. Faced with several angry mutants you can enter a paused targeting mode which lets you take a moment to think and que up actions. Shoot the guy in the leg so he can't get close enough to use his sledge hammer...heat shot the second guy...then switch to the third and shoot his weapons out of his hands so he can't fire back. You then switch back to real-time and watch the gory results play out.
With an arrary of skills for your character to specialise in, you'll also be approaching situations in ways that suit you. Charge in, all guns blazing, or sneak in and snipe? Hack the security so killer bots take care of the carnage? It's entirely up to you. The future of role playing has never looked so good.

Sounds cool, but Oblivion sounded better than it was too...

yes, but this isn't oblivion is it. It's a brand new RPG =] and it looks ****ing awesome...well sounds it

Man, the ps3 has so many good games coming out in the future. I can't wait for this one to come out. The freedom that this game will sport sounds magnificent. This will surely be on my list of games to get.

wow smithy i didnt no all those other features like slave traders and all that i thought this was an rpj were u just stick to the story mode but coming from bethsedia i shoulda guessed it would be awsome

also i read that they will be rewarding you if you stay neutral, good or evil. like in oblivion there is good and bad...yeah you can be neutral but nothing really happens...but they are trying to make a spin off staying neutral...like in the begining if you go too far to one side then you will have some tough enemies hunting you down...and also they are putting in set difficulty levels for different areas of the game...unlike oblivion where you get so strong then you find these creatures that are ridiculously strong and it kinda throws off the reality of the world...so i think that is going to be better....too bad this game doesn't come out till fall of 08 but hey now they have plenty of time to make it bad ass

ha yea then the game will be pushed buck but hopefully not cuz then i can get it for christmas of 08
