That explains part of it, I have just dragged a load of old dvd`s out of the attic about 50,I have tried them all in the Ps3 and have about 50/50 that either work or don`t. All backups work ok. All the dvd`s are UK Pal and I am wondering if it`s not just the region code thats causing some to work and others not to but maybe the level or type of copy protection used by different manufacturers. I am ripping one of the non working disks on the pc at the moment it is pal region 2&4 i am leaving in theregion codes but knocking out the copy protection. I`ll let you know the results when it`s done.

I will be in the opposite situation, I currently live in the UK and have bought a UK PS3. In August I will be moving to Canada, what do I need to do for it to work across there?

Thanks

I think the 1.6 update only gives real support to the HK version ps3 as it was released using native ntsc-j system but as HK uses pal it was updated for these systems, problem is HK pal and UK pal are a bit different so its a bit hit and miss with dvd`s about 50-50 of my UK dvd`s work ok.
Unless one of Sonys future updates give more support I think you will have to import uk titles.,saying that installing linux on your ps3 only uses a 10 gig partition on your ps3 hdd and is pretty easy to do. here is a link to the Yellow Dog Linux install guide pdf :- http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/su..._ps3_guide.pdf have a look and see what you think. You can always put a bigger hdd in your ps3 if you lik,e a 200 GB sata2 2.5 inch drive is around £110 and instuctions for changing it are in your ps3 Safety and Support guide.
the only other alternative I can think of is to get whatever format you like buy a few cheap blank dvd`s and rip and burn.................Blueray I haven`t a clue about, region codes are different to dvd ones you may just have to import from the uk.
Hope this helps.

You don't need transformer. We have 240 V and US PS3 works fine without it. (I bought one for it $ 75 and never used it).

What do you mean by HK? If it is what i think it is, would ps3 games and blue ray films from UK work on it?

It`s the Hong Kong version and I have NTSC - US and NTSC-J games so far and both work ok and so should any other format as the ps3 is multi region as far as games go. The reason I am using these formats is simple I can buy them for less than £25 off ebay etc the last one I bought for £13.79p thats new sealed games bought from the US or HK and includes p&p.
I don`t think pal blueray will play on it as these are region specific and not even the same regions as dvd but there again you can probably buy them in the specific format for your ps3 version cheaper from abroad any way just means waiting a bit longer, as for pal dvd as I posted previously some work and some don`t but if you own it, you can rip it on your pc or ps3 with linux and make yourself a backup for playing on the ps3. Linux itself, with the right software and codecs installed, shoul play pretty well any dvd as it uses some very powerfull coding for playback.

20gb JAPAN PS3 650AUD 60GB 720AUD

Hi i sell PS3 20gb is 650AUD or 720AUD for 60gb

japan model PS3 ntsc-j

region free for PS3 software YES THEY PLAY PAL AUSTRALIAN GAMES IVE TESTED 100% WORKS FINE

also yes all PS3 are 100v to 250v for worldwide use not just the japan ones the US the Pal ALL OF THEM

i how ever sell the JAPAN for cheaper the PAL price

not yes your can chip them in near future to unlock the blueray code or dvd code alsp PS1 & PS2 code

in that case a PS3 from USA or JAPAN or HONG KONG is better its was made with the chip set like PS2 to play all PS2 & PS1 games unlike the PAL unit

it plays more regions of DVD & BLUE RAY then the PAL

also as others have said yes its a hell of lot cheaper to get USA or asia english games or dvd blue ray disc even with the shipping cost from online sites or ebay

so why not get a japan PS3 its really up to buyers just as other imports are sold worlwide wide why

well a imported PSP 1.5v is better then what sony now releases in australia

also charlie WHY IS HONG KONG PAL????

hong kong is differently ntsc only the power grid is basicly pal cause electronics at 240v in aus run on hk fine also UK

but there games & consoles in hong kong gaming shops are not PAL there ntsc

OK I was wrong, got blueray movie `Casino Royale` free from Sony , it works fine in HK ps3 although it says on the back `UK `then `all regions ` in a little pyramid marked ABC. If they all came like that then none of us would have any problems.

Hi there, You seem to know about PS3 consoles bought in different country. We got my son one from Japan last year for xmas. We live in UK.The games from Japan work. The console is NTSC as are the games. The PAL games dont seem to work. When inserting it says the system software is version 1.10. To start you must update to version 1.50 or later. When I ask to update. It says no applicable update data was found. I spoke to Sony. He told me that I am not to update anyway as it will corrupt the system. Im so confused. First I get told that games are region free but obviously they cant be? Where do I purchase NTSC games from? Can I get them from UK? Any ideas? Any loopholes? Thanks

Hi caterina67, this seems a little strange, my ps3 is the HK version which is also ntsc/j I don`t know if it is any different than the Jap one and the first update Sony brought out was 1.6 to allow it to utilise the HK version of the PAL standard but in any case it played PAL or NTSC and NTSC/J games the update was really more about DVD playback than any thing else.
Sony say to update to the latest sftware version in any case I think that is now v1.92. Mine updated from the start with no problem although I had to set it into english and set up the browser to default to the playstation eur website so that I could understand the damn thing but it didn`t corrupt the data which was essentially Japanese to start with.Maybe Sony are just being pig headed on the matter as they frown upon us buying the un crippled ps3`s from abroad. One thing though you won`t be able to play ps2 games on it other than NTSC/J ones regardless. There are sites on the web where you can download the various updates to manually install but it may be a good idea to check around the other forums for advice on this matter first. On the subject of where to obtain games, I get mine off ebay so far the most I have paid for them is about 26 pounds inc p&p and so far have all the latest games just keep your eye on the ball and bid in the last 30 seconds.
Hope this helps. kvekid

hi again caterina67, below is a direct link to download the v1.92 update for the Japanese PS3.

http://djp01.ps3.update.playstation....a/PS3UPDAT.PUP

you will need a usb memory stick or one of the other memory devices the ps3 uses.
make a directotry called ps3 on the memory stick and in this drectory make another directory called update, copy the downloaded ps3 update file which is a *.pup file into the directory called update insert it into the ps3 and use the second option update manually from the ps3`s update function.

kvekid

all ps3 games, no matter what country, will work on ur ps3. unfortunately ps3/ps1/bluray/dvd movies will not play on there if bought from another country. for example, i cant play an american/japanese ps2 game on my uk ps3
