That explains part of it, I have just dragged a load of old dvd`s out of the attic about 50,I have tried them all in the Ps3 and have about 50/50 that either work or don`t. All backups work ok. All the dvd`s are UK Pal and I am wondering if it`s not just the region code thats causing some to work and others not to but maybe the level or type of copy protection used by different manufacturers. I am ripping one of the non working disks on the pc at the moment it is pal region 2&4 i am leaving in theregion codes but knocking out the copy protection. I`ll let you know the results when it`s done.

I think the 1.6 update only gives real support to the HK version ps3 as it was released using native ntsc-j system but as HK uses pal it was updated for these systems, problem is HK pal and UK pal are a bit different so its a bit hit and miss with dvd`s about 50-50 of my UK dvd`s work ok.
Unless one of Sonys future updates give more support I think you will have to import uk titles.,saying that installing linux on your ps3 only uses a 10 gig partition on your ps3 hdd and is pretty easy to do. here is a link to the Yellow Dog Linux install guide pdf :- http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/su..._ps3_guide.pdf have a look and see what you think. You can always put a bigger hdd in your ps3 if you lik,e a 200 GB sata2 2.5 inch drive is around £110 and instuctions for changing it are in your ps3 Safety and Support guide.
the only other alternative I can think of is to get whatever format you like buy a few cheap blank dvd`s and rip and burn.................Blueray I haven`t a clue about, region codes are different to dvd ones you may just have to import from the uk.
Hope this helps.

You don't need transformer. We have 240 V and US PS3 works fine without it. (I bought one for it $ 75 and never used it).

What do you mean by HK? If it is what i think it is, would ps3 games and blue ray films from UK work on it?

It`s the Hong Kong version and I have NTSC - US and NTSC-J games so far and both work ok and so should any other format as the ps3 is multi region as far as games go. The reason I am using these formats is simple I can buy them for less than £25 off ebay etc the last one I bought for £13.79p thats new sealed games bought from the US or HK and includes p&p.
I don`t think pal blueray will play on it as these are region specific and not even the same regions as dvd but there again you can probably buy them in the specific format for your ps3 version cheaper from abroad any way just means waiting a bit longer, as for pal dvd as I posted previously some work and some don`t but if you own it, you can rip it on your pc or ps3 with linux and make yourself a backup for playing on the ps3. Linux itself, with the right software and codecs installed, shoul play pretty well any dvd as it uses some very powerfull coding for playback.

20gb JAPAN PS3 650AUD 60GB 720AUD
Hi i sell PS3 20gb is 650AUD or 720AUD for 60gb
japan model PS3 ntsc-j
region free for PS3 software YES THEY PLAY PAL AUSTRALIAN GAMES IVE TESTED 100% WORKS FINE
also yes all PS3 are 100v to 250v for worldwide use not just the japan ones the US the Pal ALL OF THEM
i how ever sell the JAPAN for cheaper the PAL price
not yes your can chip them in near future to unlock the blueray code or dvd code alsp PS1 & PS2 code
in that case a PS3 from USA or JAPAN or HONG KONG is better its was made with the chip set like PS2 to play all PS2 & PS1 games unlike the PAL unit
it plays more regions of DVD & BLUE RAY then the PAL
also as others have said yes its a hell of lot cheaper to get USA or asia english games or dvd blue ray disc even with the shipping cost from online sites or ebay
so why not get a japan PS3 its really up to buyers just as other imports are sold worlwide wide why
well a imported PSP 1.5v is better then what sony now releases in australia
also charlie WHY IS HONG KONG PAL????
hong kong is differently ntsc only the power grid is basicly pal cause electronics at 240v in aus run on hk fine also UK
but there games & consoles in hong kong gaming shops are not PAL there ntsc

OK I was wrong, got blueray movie `Casino Royale` free from Sony , it works fine in HK ps3 although it says on the back `UK `then `all regions ` in a little pyramid marked ABC. If they all came like that then none of us would have any problems.
