step-by-step pc connection

Hi there.Got my ps3 and games on friday, not had a chance to use it for ong yet but i am having problems connecting to the net.Can somebody do a step by step, easy to understand guide detailing how to connect via a pc? I assume you cant just plug the broadband modem into the ps3 and connect to the web - or can you? Hope you can help.

Oh right i didnt realise.thanks for the info.
I ran my 360 through the pc but that wa a bit of a pain in the a**e to set up plus you needed to keep the pc connected when you were on live.
Cheers

Apologies for sounding like a complete idiot, but i plug the broadband modem into the usb socket on the front of the Ps3? So i dont need to use the ethernet cable at all then?
As you can guess i`m not computer literate!

my ps3 is hooked by ethernet cable straight into my router and i've not had any problems at all, runs like a dream and i didn't need to change any of the ps3 settings, i aint tried wireless simply cuz wired connections are more reliable if you can use them.

Not sure about the USB, but since you usually have to configure those, I'm not sure if the PS3 will pick it up.

Cheers for the replies.I obviously need to buy a router then going by what you guys have said. What i will probably end up doing is running it through my PC to start with,if i use the online stuff then i`ll buy myself a router. To be honest, the online play bit doesnt really interest me as i`m not the best games player and when i went on xbox live i had the p**s took out of me cos i kept losing at Need for speed most wanted. The same people kept wanting to race me!!lol Its easy to take the p**s out of someone whos probably 100`s or even 1000`s of miles away but thats the risk you take with online stuff i guess.Cheers for your help.

One other thing,i`ve downloaded the update, which i think is 1.6,but how do you know which version your machine is running originally? Or have i missed something........

From the XMB, Settings -> System Settings -> System Information

It'll show you your PS3's System Software which is the firmware version.

If you have a USB broadband modem, then you will have to get a router or route your connection through your computer, or get a ethernet modem...
