1080p
Hey, my tv is a Toshiba HD Ready "42 1080p FULL HD tv...
and when i play my ps3 connected with an hdmi wire now, it says that maximum is 1080i, not 1080p which means its not progressive.
Wondering whether there is a setting i can change so that it detects and uses 1080p since my tv is for sure, and have confirmed with shop.
If you guys have any suggestions or ideas, let me know.
Thanks, tc47

TC47, when did you buy your TV? The first and second generation 1080p TVs typically do not accept 1080p signals through HDMI, so in other words, 1080i signal will go into the TV and then it will be deinterlaced and projected at the TV's native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels... Some of the second generation 1080p TVs did accept 1080p signals through firewire, but not too many general consumers use firewire to connect their HD devices...

oh ok...
no, like i bought my HDTV a week back, so its pretty damn new. Its 1920x1080 pixels, and was told it was FULL HD 1080p, but I guess ur saying that I cant get 1080p signals, and will instead be a 1080i signal.
So to get 1080p signal on the actual tv, you cannot do it through HDMI huh?
thanks, tc47

HDMI is supposed to be the interface for 1080p signals. However, older TVs just won't accept those signals due to the lack of a 1080p processing circuitry. If you bought it a few weeks back and it is a fairly new model, then it should support 1080p. Please list the model of your TV and I'll check it for you.

the reason its saying 1080i and not 1080p is because the games your playing dont support 1080p resolution, there are only like 3 games right now for ps3 that have 1080p (nba 07 full auto and something else i think) so if your not playing any of those then thats your problem....hondan i have no idea what your talking about, you make things so complicated for an answer so simple....

hey but i have virtua tennis 3, which im sure is 1080p...
so like, its kinda interesting, because i have no clue whether it will automatically changes to it... so when i go to display settings, it says im connected via hdmi, but at 1080i... so id like to know if theres nothing i can do to get it to 1080p for the games that are capable of it?
thanks, tc47

tc47, your TV have a 1080p panel, meaning 1920x1080 native resolution, but it will not accept 1080p signals due to the lack of a 1080p signal processor.

Unfortunately, there is no shortcut here... You really have to read up on the product before you buy it. The store clerks typically do not know about these type of stuff. You can go to the manufacturer's website, a review blog or do a google search with the model of the TV followed by "1080p signal" or "1080p signal processing", these approaches will usually turn up a few results.
Don't be too upset over this though... Since although the TV can only accept 1080i signals, the signals will still get deinterlaced internally by the TV and projected to the 1080p screen. So in essense, you are still getting a 1080p picture, although some minor quality loss is expected, but it will be hardly noticible.

hey guys, one more thing...
when i download files from ps store, like trailers, should i download them 720p or will 1080p files still look better on 1080i input?
what im askin is if its still worth downloadin 1080p files if i can only input 1080i, since there are no "1080i" files...
thanks ... tc47
