you can use the regular av cables but with hdmi cable, it will look(and sound) a whole lot better when viewed on a hdtv. i don;t know the tech specs but the difference is big when upgrading from av to hdmi. as for the $100 hdmi cable, some people swear by it, others say it won't matter...i'm cheap so i just got a $20 hdmi cable from the apple store. my tv only has one hdmi connection so i just got the 2 port hdmi switcher from monoprice and used that with my dvd player and ps3. up to you though, but for me, as long as it works well, i'm going the cheaper way...

The higher the price the better the quality is a rule of thumb.

Picture quality won't be any better on a expensive HDMI cable as it is on a cheap one. The more you pay the more casing there is around the cable and it may be stronger.
The official PS3 HDMI cable is nice and cheap and works like a charm.

You can still play PS3. Though, it depends on what input your TV has. The more expensive HDMI is simply good for protecting against wear and tear since the quality for digital images will be the same. You might as well buy one for a fraction of the price and replace your cables maybe five years down the road than make one $100 purchase. But for other analog cables you might consider investing on better quality because the material inside the cables will make a difference on the image quality.

You can try component cables, they're the next best thing. You will have to buy cables for it since the PS3 doesn't come with anything other than composite cables, but perhaps you have an extra somewhere in the house. What type of TV are you using?

If its not HD there shouldnt be a HDMI port....if you have those red, yellow and white slots you will be fine and your PS3 will look great...

Its pointless to get HDMI, component, ect if you don't have a HDTV.
