Does anyone have, or know of what exact files do and do not work when playing off an external HDD. Also, i need something to convert AVI to MPEG with no water marks. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

This is the one I use to convert my vid files. Got it from this forum and it works great. Bit slow mind, but that's the only issue I have with it.

Files which aren't compatible with the PS3 seem to be rather wide spread. It seemingly can't handle animated GIF files for example, as I tried this almost as soon as I got it. There are many vid files which aren't handled either, but the converter takes care of this. Even .FLV files are handled with this, which is great for YouTube downloaded files and the like.

It has cropped up that firmware updates may address the file compatibility issues, but I'm not holding my breath. It does seem a bit odd though that Sony offer the PS3 not only as a games console but for it's media capabilities as well and yet in that respect, at the moment at least, it's rather clunky at best. That's just my opinion of course
