I just bought Battlefront 2 just to try out PS2's on-line, and it does work. You just have to go through the menus of the game save your network settings on your virtual PS2 game save card and your set.
There is quite a few people that play on-line in that game still. I'm guessing as time goes buy actually MORE PS2 games will have their servers back up, or the devs will re-vamp the on-line play, because of renewed interest in the game. Which means more people may buy it just to play on-line. A lot of people also weren't able to play PS2 games on-line in the past...now they can, so they may be breaking out all their on-line enabled games and giving them a whirl.
Once developers realize that the PS3's built in on-line capabilities will renew interest in old titles and they can juice those old titles a little bit more, I'm sure we will see more PS2 on-line.
