Disc Drive - Won't Spin or Load

The bluray drive in my PS3 won't spin or load anything. I've described my situation below. I'd be grateful for any advice or help that you can offer me.

Here’s what I have:

1.40 GB PS3 (CECHG01)

Original blu-ray drive had some loose screws stuck to a magnet. It wouldn’t except disc and would make a loud clicking noise on startup. Other than the bum drive, everything else seems to be working properly. It’s firmware has been updated to 3.41.

2.Blu-ray drive (CE131174878)

Complete drive with daughter board and everything. Purchased off eBay. Supposedly it comes from a 40 GB drive and has a good laser.

Here’s what I did:

1.Removed the old blu-ray drive.
2.Swapped the daughter board off the original blu-ray drive and placed it on the ebay purchased drive (I read somewhere that the blu-ray drive’s daughter board is paird with the PS3 motherboard).
3.Installed the ebay drive in the PS3.

Here’s what happened:

1.The PS3 started normally.
2.I put in a DVD that I had lying around.
3.The DVD entered normally, but the drive never spins and the disc never loads.
4. I ejected the DVD and tried another, same result.
5.I tried a CD, no dice.
6.I went into the PS3 utility screen and tried to rebuild the db, restore the file system, even restore the PS3. Nothing.

Here’s where you come it:

1.Did I do anything incorrectly in swapping out these two drives?
2.Can anyone out there confirm based on the drive number (CE131174878)
that this drive does in fact come from a 40 GB? Or is at least compatible with a 40GB PS3?
3.How would I verify that the laser is functioning properly?
4.What else would cause the drive to not spin or load?
5.Does anyone have any other suggestions out there?

Hey man, I might be having the exact same problem as you...maybe we can get this figured out. I have couple questions:

1. Before you replaced any parts, did the drive suck in or eject any discs?
- Mine will not. If I try to put in a disc, nothing happens, no noise or any attempt to suck in the disc. Same thing when I press the eject button. It doesn't make any noise when powered on.

2. The daughter board that you transferred from the defective drive to the new drive...is that the small circuit board that is attached to the bottom of the drive and has all the ribbon cables attached to it? Did replacing the rest of the drive assembly (but not the daughter board) cause any change in the problems you are having?

Other than that...I would suggest trying to put the daughter board that came with the ebay drive back on it and see if that helps. Otherwise it sounds like the laser or lense assembly might need to be replaced, as this looks like what would control spinning the disc, etc.
