Here's a tip. Don't leave it lying around. Thay way nobody will spill something on it.

make sure you use denatured alcohol to clean it - if you dont anything else can take the coverings off the circutry and destroy it for good - like anything electrical theres a 50/50 chance it will work after something has spilled on it - you can also try opening a small side of it to make a small gap and pop it into your hotpress for a few days - it will help to dry it out. but with all this hastle you might as well just go for a new 6-axis. they're cheap enough

Personally, I'd take it apart. I've taken apart my tv/vid/stereo remotes in the past and they're easy enough to put back together.
The circuit board will be separate from the keys, so technically all you need to do is take it apart with a screw driver, separate the keys from the sensors on the board and wipe/clean the keys and any other affected areas carefully. A damp cloth should probably do the trick and if anything does get wet or damp as a result, leave to dry completely. I'd say this is the best option rather than getting a new controller.
Modern tech stuff is a lot stronger than many people think. Just because something is spilt onto it, doesn't mean it needs to be replaced. I remember, I stupidly got my old Sony Ericsson w810 soaked in water and it decided to not work straight after. I took all the back panel off, took out the battery and left it under a lamp for a few hours to air it out. It was fine and lasted me the next year till I upgraded it.
