NAT Type Fails

Hi,

When I connected my PS3 to my wireless router (Westell VersaLink 327W), the PS3 managed to connect to the Internet and I could use the PS3 browser.

The firewall in the Westell VersaLink modem/router was set Medium at that time. Later, when I tried connecting to the Playstation Network and Sign in, the connection timed out. Keep in mind that, at that point, I could still connect to the Internet and use the PS3 browser.

To troubleshoot this situation, I used the Internet Connection Test (under Settings > Network Settings > Settings and Connection Status List). Under that test, all tests passed, except for NAT Type. It Failed! However, note that I could still connect to the Internet and use the PS3 browser.

I then changed the modem/router firewall setting to Low. I then could connect to the Playstation Network. With the firewall set to Low, the NAT Type in the Internet Connection Test showed it now was Type 2, rather than Failed.

I'm thinking that I can make some configuration change in the modem/router to allow me to connect to the Playstation Network, while keeping my firewall setting at Medium, rather than at Low. I like the idea of having a higher firewall setting, not?

However, I have no idea of what I need to change in the modem/router or how to do it. Anyone have any information on how I can do that?

Feel free to ask questions. Is my situation clear? Communication is hard.

Freddy

Freddy,

What you need to know is how to do Port Forwarding for your Router.

2 things you need to find out;

1. What the IP address for your PS3

2. What port is used for NAT

Your IP addy should be easy to find as this should show up on your ps3 status page, but the port for port forwarding will be difficult to find unless someone else could help with a much easier way to find out, but I doubt it.

So what you need to do is set your firewall back to what it was for security and follow this link to do port forwarding for you router. >>Port Forwarding<<

For an example, on my Belkin router I've got Port Forward for my PS3's IP address and I've forwarded all ports from 100 - 64000. It works for me, so I hope it works for you.

kckepz,

Hey, thanks man. The information you provided is all I need to get this job done. I'm on it as we speak. I'll come up with something for figuring out the port number. I've now got enough poop to get started.

kckepz and All,

Just a feedback note to let you all know that I managed to get my port forwarding working for the PS3 PlayStation Network. I can now connect while my modem/router firewall is set to medium.

Unfortunately, there is more than one way to enter the required port forwarding data into the router. It took me several iterations before I discovered the correct entry method. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. An old but true saying.

Thanks again,

Freddy

Later Edit: I forgot to mention that I found the port numbers, that PlayStation Network requires you to forward, at the same site that kckepz posted in his initial response to my query. You can find the port information here:

http://portforward.com/cports.htm

That site has port forwarding information for a lot of different functions. It's a good site to know about. I just thought you'd like to know.

Even Later Addition:

The Sony website lists the ports to use for connecting the PS3 to the PlayStation Network and to the game servers, here:

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-...p_sp=undefined

I should have looked on the Sony site first. Doh! Amazing how sometimes one doesn't think of the obvious.

Freddy
