Slightly over a month ago, my PS3 stopped reading disks.
Since that keeps me from playing games, I returned it to the store, and ta-da, only 5 weeks later, a brand new PS3 was ready for pickup.
Which we did yesterday.
Assassins creed was a bit unstable, but everything else seemed to work at first sight.
Then, i configured the network settings, updated to 2.10, updated assassins creed to the latest version. Then, when i wanted to make a new user profile in the XMB, the system froze, HD light solid orange.
Holding the power switch for 10 seconds switched the system off, but ever since, it won't shut down except for the power switch on the backside or pressing the standby switch on the front for 10 secs.

I figured a hard reset might silve things, so i turned the PS3 off, held the power switch for 3 beeps (one at 'on', one a bit later and one when it turned off again).

After turning the system back on, i see the background 'waves' it always places there, but no XMB in front of it.
Removing/reinserting the HD didn't do a thing.

Anybody have any suggestions other than bringing it back and waiting for another 5 weeks?

I'd just ask them for a new one. Funny, more and more PS3 desths are being reported. Maybe with the less expensive to make 40 GB models we will be forced to eat our words after mocking all those 360 owners. I'm just glad I got mine near release, when the 60GB models were out.

Mine is a 60GB version as well. Not good for Sony's name, this. . .

Just take it to the shop you got it from and demmand a new one instead of giving it to sony.

Just called them; the guy at the phone working sundays has exactly 0 authorization to do whatever, "call back tomorrow, to after-sales". Hoping for a decent solution. But no gaming for me, today :'(

yep me 2 i got 60gb in june and its working a beauty but what if the 60gb busts as they dont sell 60gb anymore what will they do on refunding it

prolly send u a 40g but ask for a game so u can even out the price a lil

I've got a 60gb one as well and have done since release day in the UK, not a problem since.

Maybe the new cut down 40gb model has cut corners where it shouldn't in terms of build, but I wouldn't and don't want to presume this. 2 of my mates have 40gb models, the rest of them, 60gb models and so far no reports of unreliability.

One thing I don't get, why did they replace the chrome strip with a plain matt silver one? I know it differentiates the models, but it doesn't look as good in my opinion.

Anyway though, back to your problem...could, as was said earlier in the topic, just be bad luck. I'd return it, shouldn't be any problem with them taking it back apart from the hassle it's causing yourself.

I don't believe that a lot of these so called 'failures' are genuine. True some are but I spend a lot of time on the official forums and you see a lot of posts on there from people claiming their PS3 has died and they have really small post counts, maybe 1 or 2. They come on, do their complaint and are never seen online again......coincidence? I'm not so sure...

First time, we got a new 60GB, though they don't sell those anymore in NL.
And since they don't sell them, my old one needed to get back to Sony... so, 4-7 weeks no PS3 for me
I think not! So, i bought a 40G one, to kill the time in between ;)
(sharing a house with some friends, and moving out soon, i want one for myself then, anyways)

I hate reading threads like this cos I purchased my 60gb PS3 from Japan and Sony Europe have said they will not honour any guarantee's on PS3's taken out of their region.

Everytime there's an update it's always sqeaky buttocks time

return it, ask for a refund or a 40 gb

iv got a 40gb and iv had no problems with it (so far)
