Home theatre

Ok, so DUH!!!! I've been researching home theatre and am still a little (ok LOT) confused about hook ups. I use my ps3 as my dvd/blueray player (of course - dont even own a dvd player). So i dont really care about home theatre with dvd, I'm just looking for kick butt surround sound for games and movies and Packer games via my cable box.

Ok, so with that in mind, do any of you know where to get good hook up advice for knuckle heads like me? I'm just trying to understand what kind in/out hook ups i really need in the home theatre system I buy.

For what its worth, I am primarily getting home theatre for gaming, but of course want it to work with DVD/Blueray and my cable box.

Do you basically hook everything into your TV and then use the TV output to the home theatre in that case?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, can we have some details on your hardware.

I for example, have an sdtv but it doesn't have 5.1 on it, but, the dvd player I have does have 5.1, so, when I want to watch a movie in 5.1 I use the dvd player, if I want to play any blu ray dvd's in 5.1, I have an optical cable going to my pc and I route it through there, so, it all depends on what hardware you have and what inputs and outputs your hardware has, more details will help us come up with a good solution for you.

What you basically want is a decoder. I have a creative gigaworks 7.1 system that has a rake of outputs on the back. 3 opticals, 3 analogue and so on. Then you can route all your sound through that and just leave the picture to the TV - works a treat and TV speakers are always shite. Only problem is i'm not sure that particular decoder is available though others are.
What you actually want is this though its £1500 and therefore a mile out of anyone's price range! http://www.denon.co.uk/site/frames_m...detail&Pid=340
Have a look at the pictures of the back. you could plug anything in to it!

Basically you want a sound system that has a load of outputs built in. I have the PS and Sky HD running through optical and i have just taken delivery of a HD DVD box that will use up the last optical port. That way you can guarantee the best sound and just have to choose which output to use when changing devices.

I'm looking to buy one of those Denons hopefully this weekend, so I'll let you know how I get on. It all depends on finances as they really are expensive, but for what you get, it may very well be worth it. However, with a unit like that you probably need some really decent speakers to match, of which I don't have... luckily the speakers I do have are Denon anyway, so they'll be alright for the time being (so long as I dont turn the volume up too much!!)

Oh its def a weapon of an AV reciever and i'd love to blast £1500 on something like that but the decoder I have sort of does the same job - just not in such spectacular fashion. I think the point is that you need loads of inputs in order to get the best out of a home cinema system and make sure you can connect everything.

Keep us posted on the denon though - jealous of that! Could you not trim some off the price and get some awesome speakers as well?
