Hard Drive Swap Help Needed

Heys everyone, I just got a new 40g system but want to upgrade the HDD ASAP before I start downloading vids/demos etc and saving progress on my games, Just wanted any advice or feedback on a HDD i'm looking into, It is a 200g 7200rpm Seagate HDD, I know it may have slight increasde in noise & heat but I would assume it's minimal from what I hear, Has anyone else updated thier HDD on the PS3 and have you encountered any problems? Also does anyone know what PS3 transfer rate is only because these SATA HDD's have multiple choices of 150/300 etc transfer rates and I wasnt sure what the PS3 was set at, I know it will just scale down to the lower setting if thats what it uses but was just curious.

Also since this is new out of the box 40g with no game saves or downloaded data on the HDD can I just swap the HDD's right out before I even start using the PS3? Is there anything that needs to be backed up or preperations made before I switch these? Thanks for any help or advice, just want to upgrade my 40g to at leasta 160/200g seeing how some games are taking up 3-5g worth of space per game.

1 more thing, can the PS network be connected to using any CAT5 Ethernet cable or are there different variations?

Cant give any solid advice on the HDD as far azs i know u can swap them out no probs, as far as the ethernet goes, mine works fine on cat5e patch cable no lag or slowdown, some people have cat6 because it is apparently faster...
Hope that helped

go ahead and swap it out...a total of 5 screws is what stands in your way of doing...make sure you have a small scewdriver though...the four that hold the harddrive in place can strip easily...i put in a 250 5400 seagate...if im not mistaken transfer rate is at 150...as far as doing it out of the box it shouldnt be a problem...even if you had a profile on there it transfers over...i remember someone saying that you would have update it again but this was not the case with me

I just recently changed my HDD and it was very easy.
1. look on the side that says hard drive and pull the cover off
2. unscrew the blue screw, and slide the metal handle to the right
3. Make sure your screw driver actually fits the 4 screws that is holding the HDD in the metal cradle. if not you will strip the screws.
4. replace the HD and put the unit back together again.
5. start the system and it will ask do you want to format new drive? click yes and it will format and restart. and your done.

when it comes to a HDD do not exchange it with a 7200rpm drive it will cause the ps3 to over heat and the ps3 was not meant to draw more power to run that drive. I suggest you get the Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM, from newegg. you will be a very happy person.

Hard drive questions for new HDD

So I installed the new 200g SATA150 HDD and out it back together todqay, I booted up the system and I got this:

SYStem software cannot be run correctly, press the PS button to try and restart the system,if system cannot be restarted the system partition of the HDD must be reformatted & must have software reinstalled.
insert media software that contains update data of version 2.10 or later. press start & select at the same time to restart.
for info on how to obtain update data refer to the SCE website for youe region.

Any one else experience this or any reboot problems? Thanks

I'm guessing what's wrong with that HDd is that it's 7200 rpm. This post will probably help.

Hi Mfellela

I had this exact same prob today , here is what you do....

..download the latest update ( 2.35 ) onto your PC.

...put this into a file marked UPDATE.

...put that file into another file marked PS3.

...burn this to a CD ,and put it into your PS3.

This should do it , it took me 2 attempts but everything works fine now.

BTW . Windows will prob not burn a DATA CD , so you might need to use a diff prog.

This is my first post , so , please let me know how you get on.

Good Luck.

(I don`t know about the 7200 issue mines a WD Scorpio 250g 5400)
