Cannot Play Video from USB!
Hi All,
I'm new to this forum and PS3 in general. I have been very happy chugging along with the PS3 and playing DIVX CD/DVD's since the 2.10 update last December. But for some reason I am never able to play these types of files directly off of a USB flash drive. Everything I have read says that I should be able to do this, but when I insert a USB drive the error says that there are no supported files to play.
Any ideas?
Thanks

^^^^You probably don't have them in the right format. PS3 supports AVI's and DivX vids. I don't know if it's only a specific AVI codec or all of em, but you can get a free converter just search RedKawa.

Thanks for the response. I thought that this might also be the issue, so I burned the files to DVD and they played just fine on the PS3. So I know that the files are compatible.
Its odd that when trying to access the USB memory key through the Video menu that the files on the drive are not displayed at all. Could this be a drive formatting issue? The drive is currently formatted as FAT32.

I had similar problems about incompatible video files, but mine was with streaming media from my PC, try copying the file to your PS3 HD Then try and play it, for some reason the PS3 does get a little tetchy with video from time to time
Hope that helps

Nope, that's just how it is. If it were formatted to NTFS, the PS3 wouldn't even recognize the USB Drive.

Im pretty sure if you bring up the options when the USB key is selected under any tab there is a show all option, click that and it should display everything on the USB drive

Oh yeah that's true my mistake. But I don't think it really makes a difference because if you select the video then won't it just say Incompatible or something?

Thanks for the responses all. Just wondering, have any of you been able to successfully play video files directly off of the USB drive? I am beginning to think that this is not even possible...
I know that the video files I was using are compatible with the PS3 as they will play just fine burnt to a DVD-R.

^^^^I've done it with both my Archos (like a video ipod) and with a USB Stick. They both happened to be DivX files, if that helps any.
EDIT :: Again, not sure if it matters, but I did this after I first updated my PS3. There have been 2 more updates since then, and the recent one added some features to video playback, so that could have changed the USB playing ability possibly.

So, did the files just play like they would have if it was a DVD or CDR? Did you have to do anything special?

Thanks for the help everyone. After a little bit of messing around, I figured out that if I select the USB Drive, go to Options and Display All Files then I can select each file individually and they will play just fine - just like they would on a DVD-R.
So I suppose my next question is why the heck wont they display normally when natively selecting the USB drive? Oh well...
