Transferring HD Movies from PC to PS3

Hi guys I would really appreciate it if ANYONE can help me here with this issue. I have searched google for days and I am going bonkers!!!!!!!!!! First I tried installing mkv2vob and it gave me an error saying "Installation ended prematurely because of an error". Then I installed PS3 Video 9 and guess what: It takes 15 hours to convert an .MKV 4.6GB to something that can be viewed on a PS3. Is there a FASTER way? Thanx!!

ok, the PS3 has pretty robust media capabilities

What I do is not use media transcoders and save the video on the PS3.

I use Tversity a piece of media streaming software that can convert files (if necessary) while streaming them from your PC to your PS3.

Install tversity on your PC and set the files you want to share
make sure your PS3 and PC are somehow hooked up directly over your network (wireless or wired)
start the media server (click the settings tab of Tversity then start sharing)
leave the PC turned on and go to your PS3 go to the video tab then search for media server if everything has worked it should find the tversity software and your should be able to search and view all the media you shared on your PC

If you don't want to do that or cant then run your PC converting overnight or buy a faster PC, converting video is a really data intensive application and needs a fast PC especially for HD video.

heres the link to the tversity software: http://tversity.com/home

^^^^Wait so with that, let's say I have a movie that's not compatible with PS3. If I just want to watch it once, can I just stream it onto my PS3 with Tversity without converting it?

If your PC is powerful enough it can convert the file whilst streaming it to your PS3, my pc is like the worlds slowest and it can just about handle it so if u have like a dual core pc with 1+gb of ram u shud be fine.

to answer your question yes

^^^^Oh ok so I'm watching the converted version on my PS3. That makes more sense, I thought the PS3 would somehow be able to magically play unrecognized movie files from your computer.

/\/\/\ sort of, the way it works is the PC converts the unrecognised video file whilst sending it to the PS3 bit by bit but the file remains the same on your PC. Think of it like this...a guy is speaking japenese to you, you could record it and take ages trying to convert it into english or you could get a translator to speak it to you in english while the guy is talking. Same principle but with video files, tversity acts like the translator making the PS3 understand the data whilst it is receiving it

Thanx for the reply man. OK so I have 40GB PS3 and my movies are average 4.5GB. Can I buy an external hard drive so that I can add more space for my PS3 and download all my movies form my PC(like 15 .MKV) to PS3?

^^^^If the external HDD uses USB to hook up, then you can use it, but it has to be formatted to FAT32 I believe, or it won't be recognized.

Another alternative is to buy a laptop HDD, like 200GB or whatever you want, and take out the current PS3 one and put the new one in. It's completely safe and Sony even provides information on how to do it, so it's completely legal.

If you do go with the second option, you may want to get a 7200 RPM HDD, since the current one is 5400. That is, unless you're fine with the load times you're currently facing.

Lol sorry I didn't see this. But um, on my computer, which is 2.5 Ghz Single Core Pentium 4, 512 MB Ram, it takes about 90 minutes to convert a 2 hour movie, then like 2 minutes to transfer it.

But it's hard to tell because I don't get HQ movies, mine are all like 1~2 GB's. So your movies are a lot larger and will take longer, but on the other hand you have twice the RAM and a better CPU. I'd imagine it takes you 90 minutes as well.
