PS3 Repair - Yes or No?
So I have a PS3 that's stopped working. It's passed warranty and it was a bit dusty so I decided to crack the case to blow the dust out. It didn't help so I called Sony and they said they would take it back for repair despite the fact that I had opened it which is contrary to what most people say, that Sony will not look at an opened console. Should I believe them? Is this just a Sony ploy to suck some more cash out of my pocket?

You should ask them how much money it will cost to fix this. And then make your decision.

Get it fixed...
You would have wasted $600 or however much you payed, as long as you keep it in good shape this time around, it would be money well spent.... Really, I don't think we can help you out here.... Its your choice.. Simply yes or no... or

I didn't think they cared about opening it as long as it's evident that the PS3 stopped working due to its own problems and not something you did. Especially since they have published guides on installing Linux and on replacing the HDD.

I guess Sony is sending me a mailer box. Supposedly it's going to be $150, we'll see I guess.

Of course $150 is better than $600. If that's the case I'd be stoked, I guess I'm concerned if the console will fall under their "Unserviceable Items" policy will I still get charged $150 and just get it back or what. I suppose that I'm going to be a bit of a guinea pig for the PS3 community. I'll surely post the results here either way.

FYI for all. Sony replaced my 60GB CECHA01 with a brand spanking new unit, also a CECHA01 60GB, in spite of it having been opened. So to quash the rumors about what Sony will and won't fix they will probably fix just about any PS3 that you send them.

^^^^That's not bad at all though the $150 is kinda a downer b/c I remember reading that Sony offers lifetime warranties on all PS3's for hardware related problems that aren't caused by the owners.

I'm A-OK with it because I bought my PS3 secondhand. So all in all I still paid way less than $600 for my 60GB.
