Failed Update Need Help
Sponsored Links
My nephew was updating his PS3 about 3 months ago, not sure what version, anyhoo, it's out of warranty and the screen froze in the middle of this update and now his ps3 doesn't display, I've spent all night looking around the net for a fix but to with no result, spent an hour searching this site aswell, but can't find a fix. I now have a better feel of the problem, but obviously with no display can't re-do an upgrade because I can't see the menu's. Is there anyway of updating without display. I have downloaded and installed the latest update frpm the officall ps3 site onto a memory stick in PS3/UPDATE folder and have tried the conroller connected via usb and turning on holding select and start together, but the update will not load. The ps3 turns on takes discs and spins them and the green light on the front is solid, Iv'e done a reset holding the on/off switch and waiting for the beeps to reset the display settings to default and tried using hdmi and composite but this doesn't display either, now I'm at the end of my knowledge and reseach, if anyone has any suggestions to help I would be very greatfull. ![]() Thanks in advance. Wow you pretty much did exactly what I was gonna suggest (about resetting the display settings by holding down the power button) but just to double check, you did it like this, right?
-Turn off Manual Switch on back of PS3. -Hold finger down on touch power button in front -While holding ^^that button^^, turn the manual switch back on -Continue holding down the touch button until it beeps a few times

Thanks for the reply, I hadn't tried it exactly that way, no. But I just have and still no picture via hdmi, a quick question when you reset the display settings to default, would it default to hdmi, composite or component video?
regards psxnut

^^^^It defaults to the Red, White, and Yellow cable settings. I guess those are called composite, because it's not component and it's definitely not HDMI.
So you should do the hard reset, then plug it in via the RWY cables that came with the system, and to be safe, do it on a completely normal TV, not a projector screen or a HD TV.

OK did hard reset with composite cable, but still no graphics, there is definately something happening via that cable, but at most its a couple of flickers and no display, I think that the update only got part installed and has corrupted the boot process, only letting it get a far as assigning the cable port to use, the controller doesn't pair with the ps3, all 4 lights keep flashing, even with it connected via usb lead. I'm getting the idea that it needs to go to a service centre for the latest update to be loaded to the internal software chip, probably similar to P.O.S.T. or CMOS on a pc. Obviously it would be nice if there were a way of programming this chip myself via memory stick or cdr, but unless someone out there knows the proceedure, if there is one, and could let me know, I think sending it to sick bay is the only option.
I would appreciate any further input from anyone. Cheers for now. psxnut

I doubt you can install the firmware manually yourself, it probably would take Sony professionals. I would just call Sony up at this point. You may end up having to fork over some cash but it's better than pouring the $400 you spent down the tube.
