You can directly run a ethernet cable from your Cable modem to your PS3, but that will only enable your PS3 to have Internet connection while disables all other connections. As crash mentioned above, the better way to connect your PS3 is through a router.
As far as the component (red, blue and green) cables in the back, are you sure they are red green and blue and not composite (yellow, red and white)? If the connection is indeed component, then there should also be another red and white connector associated with the first 3 connectiors. Red Green and Blue represents the color separation in the RGB coloring scheme, while the red and white are RCA left and right channel audio inputs. If your TV do have these connections, then you should be able to run PS3 in at least 480 progessive scan mode (480p). You must buy a set of PS3 component cables in order to untilize these connections.
