What do you know about HDMI to DVI-D?

I have been using my PS3 for about a month now hooked up to my HD Gateway 19" w/HDCP monitor via a $50 hdmi to dvi-d radio shack cable. When all of the sudden last Sunday afternoon at this time I turned the machine and monitor on and was getting no signal.
First step was hooking the playstation back up to my tv via the AV cables to be sure the PS3 was working.
Next I return the cable to radio shack, and still no picture. So what do I do, carry the PS3 and cables up to best buys geek squad, which I was told over the phone they would check my HDMi port, but go figure they didnt have an hdmi cable or any HD DVI monitor w/ HDCP. So I pack it back up and walk to the closest HD computer monitor w HDCP and hook up my cable and PS3, and GO freakin figure, IT WORKS!!!!
NEXT, new monitor from Gateway which I must add came quite FAST!! Regardless, I get it all hooked up and NO SIGNAL! WTF????
Next, I contact Sony which assures me that since it worked on the screen at Best buy with my cable that its a Gateway issue. Meanwhile I'm thinking in my head, could an update have changed the compatablity of the PS3 and my monitor, so I ask the guy at sony if thats a possibility and of course his answer was no he done some "research" and he said the updates wouldn't have an affect on hardware compatability.
Of course gateway's has no technical information that could explain why it would just stop working or why two monitors would be having the same problem. I've searched high and low and not to many people are even doing the hdmi to dvi thing to have seen or heard of this kind of a problem. So my last line of defense is getting my problem out ther to you guys to see if we can come up with an explanation before i'm completely bald

There should be a input source button on the front of your monitor. Make sure you have selected the DVI as a source of input instead of any analog sources, also you can try to use a computer with a DVI capable graphics card and see if the monitor takes in a signal from it. Finally, make sure the output source on the PS3 is set to HDMI and all supported resolutions are selected.

Thanks for the Reply!

Yes I have checked every setting on the PS3. I was using this setup for a month until one day it just quit working. All I did every day was power it on then switch the input via the INPUT button on the side of my screen. I like to think of myself as electronic savvy, but this one is really getting the best of me.

I haven't been able to locate anyone in my area with another system to try on the monitor. I thought replacing it would help me rule it out.

Now its looking to me like my 30 day old monitor is already outdated and useless with the Playstation 3 which makes me hesitant to even buy another HD monitor because who knows when that one will stop being compatible.

I don't think the monitor is outdated, since it is HDCP compliant. I think you should try to find someone (or go to Best Buy) and test out the DVI input of the monitor and make sure it still works.

well....i tried that

I took the monitor up to best buy and had a guy in the Geek squad department plug in a media center PC with a DVI cable and we got a picture.

This just tells me more in-definately that the PS3 isn't gonna work with this monitor anymore. Now could anyone tell me why exactly 30 days later they no longer work together?

Sony wont even talk to you if you mention you are using a HDMI to DVI cable, because they Reccomend a straight HDMI cable. The rep even said, I understand it was working for a month before, but we only support HDMI.

So I called back the second time and just said I was using and HDMI cable and that I had replaced the cable and the monitor, but they still were not working together and since it worked with my cable on a 22'' monitor in best buy that it must be an issue with my monitor and to contact Gateway. Well, the specs on my monitor OBVIOUSLY DID NOT CHANGE, but the Playstations change every week, now you tell me which one you think is responsible for them not working...

So I even asked the guy if I could restore the PS3 unit back to factory Specs and of course the answer I got was no... So pee on the little guys it how it would seem to me

Have you tried to connect the PS3 to another display device via HDMI? Could it be a defect with the PS3 HDMI port? Have you tried different cables / adaptors? The cable / adaptor could have been defective as well.

Unfortunately....

The only cable I have is the HDMI to DVI-D one that I bought at radio shack. I dont own any tv's currently that use HDMI so I have no use for the cable. And I dont use any adapters, its just a straight cable.

I know the HDMI port on the PS3 is working because I checked that after replacing the cable. I brought my PS3 up to Best buy and hooked it into an HP 22" Monitor, the model number is (w22) and the signal was there as soon as I pressed the input button.

I understand how to use my products, it just seems to me that an update on the PS3 has caused them not to work. The gateway screen I have is Model: (FPD1975W) The only spec differences I could see was that the HP monitor had a higher resolution and slower response time. The rest all seemed to be the same. I have only read of one other person having a display problem after an update, but he was using a straight hdmi cable to a regular TV.

I really appreciate you trying to help, i'm sure you could understand what its like to play it everyday, then be without it for a few weeks

I can't possibly think of an update disrupting the signal from your PS3 to a display. Did you use the same HDMI to DVI cable when you brought your PS3 to Best Buy? I mean, there can only be a few things wrong here: Your HDMI output on the PS3, which you have eliminated as a fault area. Your DVI-D connector on your monitor, which you have also eliminated as a fault area. Finally, there is the cable, so check and see if the cable works on other monitors if you haven't done so.

In addition, HDCP do specifies a handshake process between devices, it is a PKI structure somewhat similar to the digital certificate or certification authority service. It is possible for the handshake to fail, thus causing problems with the display, but that happens very rarely, if that was the case, then you should be able to fix the problem by power cycling both devices, so unplug the monitor and PS3 for 1 minute and then plug them both back in. Let me know if that helps.

hmmm...

I did use MY cable when I hooked up to the HP monitor in Best buy and got the HDMI to work on the PS3

When we tested the monitor at Best Buy they used their own DVI cord(not a dual link) because they had nothing HDMI to test it with.

So in essence, everything has been tested and worked seperately, but not together since the 18th. The 17th was the last day I used them together.

I have tried every possible start up and shut down sequence I could think of with both the PS3 and the Monitor on several different occasions with 2 seperate Gateway monitors.

None of it makes any sense to me, If I hold the Power button down until the second beep when I power on the PS3 it actually detects the HDMI cable and will ask me if I want to use it and I select yes and still NO SIGNAL. So what gives? I feel like I have covered all my angles and still can't come up with anything other than, I'M S.O.L.

I guess you get what you pay for though, and the monitor was cheap in comparison... $285 to my door

i just cant go back from HD.....

This is very strange, to say the least. I don't know what else to tell you man. If you still have warranty on the monitor then return it and get a new one... or just bite your lips and get an HDTV.

I just had the same problem. I own PS3 already for like 5months (since it was released) and always used HDMI-HDMI cable connected to Sceptre Naga 37" TV.
About a week ago I turn my PS3 on and theres no image. I tried all kinds of things..nothing seems to help There were completely no changes (xcept of PS3 updates).
At the moment i'm using component cable which supports 1080i but transition between colors is kinda crappy i dont know what to do ..how to solve it?
