connection problem

Hey!!

AS you can probably tell, I am new to the forum.

I have DSL and everytime i try to test the connection, it finds the IP address but it fails the next step.

Does anybody have any idea why?

Thanks,

~Matt

Welcome to the forum Matt. Are you connecting using wireless or the wired connection?

OK, I don't know how tech savvy you are, but there are a couple of things you can try... I am going to try to be as detailed as possible, but if you are not sure what I am talking about, then you should get someone who is more familiar with data routing and networking to help you run through these instructions...

1. Make sure you are using the correct cable. The network cable that came with the PS3 is fine, but make sure you are not using a CAT5 crossover cable (usually the cable has "crossover" labeled on its sheath)

2. Many ISP companies use reserved DHCP, and some even use static IP addresses. In the case of reserved DHCP, your IP address is assocaited with your computer's MAC address, so only a device with that particular MAC address will be able to acquire an IP address from the ISP's DHCP pool. To check and see if this is the case, there are a few steps you must perform:

a. Connect your computer to the DSL modem with the same network cable you used to connect the PS3, and verify there is an Internet connection. (If there is no connection, then it may be the cable you are using, and you should try another cable)

b. From your computer, go to start menu, click on "run", and type in "cmd" in the run box.

c. Once the command prompt (black window with C:\>) appears, type in "ipconfig" and record down the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS server information for the "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection"

d. Once you have recorded the data, from the command prompt, type in "ipconfig /release", At this point you will either get a error message, which will indicate that your IP configuration maybe static. Or you will get a "0.0.0.0" value for your IP address and its subnet mask, which will indicate that you are using DHCP.

e. If you get an error from the previous step, then enter the IP address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway information you have recorded from step c. into your PS3, and it should work from there. Otherwise follow the next step.

f. If you got a 0.0.0.0 IP address after you released the IP address, then that means you have a DHCP address. What you want to do now is to wait for a minute or so, and then type in "ipconfig /renew" in the command prompt. This will renew your IP address, now if you got the same IP address as the one you have recorded in step c, then chances are that you have a reserved DHCP, which means you have to get a router and copy the MAC address from your computer to your router. On the other hand, if you get a different IP address, then there maybe other underlying problems with your DSL modem or the PS3 network settings.

Crossfade, if you already have a router that is connected to your Cable or DSL modem, then you do not need another router. Is your IP address 192.168.x.x and your gateway is 192.168.x.1? If that is the case, then you are already behind a NAT router. What you may have to do is to configure your router properly. However, you should try your PS3 on your network first and see if it works before diving into these settings.

In order to to that, you can connect your computer to your router and open an Internet browser, from the internet browser, you want to type in "http://" followed by your gateway IP address (ie. http://192.168.1.1), this should bring up the router's configuration page, please keep in mind that some routers have an user name and password associated to it. If you didn't change the user name and password, then you can refer to your router's documentation and retrieve the default user name and password.

Once in the router configuration page, you want to find the DHCP settings, depending on the brand and model of your router, this setting can be located in different places. Typically, check under LAN settings, or network settings. What you want to make sure is that DHCP is enabled, and you have a wide range of IP addresses to choose from. It is hard to say where these settings are on your router, since the router configuration pages varies for different brands and models.

As mentioned before, what I would suggest for you is to hook up your PS3 to the router and see if it works before attempting to mess with the configurations. Chances are if you are behind a NAT router, then the dynamic DHCP settings are already enabled, even if there are reserved nodes on your network. So try it out, and if it doesn't work, then let me know, and we can try to figure it out.

Matt, did you try to find out if you have reserved DHCP? I don't think an ISP's support will help you in the way you hope. Many times they will offer you to subscribe to another line or another service (such as their routing service). Do you have any friends who are a bit tech savvy, if I were you, I would ask them for their help.

If you don't have anyone else to help you, and assuming you are running on Windows XP, then please run the following command and post back what you have received in the text file. To run the command, go to start, click on run, and copy and paste the following command to the run box and click on OK.

netsh interface ip show config >%systemdrive%\config.txt

After you have executed this command, go to your local hard drive (ie. C:\) and open the config.txt file. Copy all of its contents and send it to me via PM, I will try to help you from there.
