Yet another connection problem.

I just want to know once and for all if there is a way to get online with my ps3 through my dorm room(which only allows one MAC address to be registered at a time), without any extra hardware. I'm using an ethernet cable straight from my computer to my wall port. As i'm sure you know, it is the (80710102) An error occured while resolving the name with the server.

OK, Fortyninerfan, so your university is using MAC address filtering for your dorm room. Now, whether you can get online with your PS3 depends on the routing and accessing control technology used by your University. If they are going as far as restricting the MAC address on your port, then they are either very security-conscious or they don't have enough money to buy better access control equipment, and frankly, I am leaning toward the former speculation. If they are very security conscious, then they may also have implemented some type of smart switching technology (ie. Cisco Catalyst switches), which will automatically shut off you port when multiple MAC addresses are detected from one port. If that is the case, then you don't have much options, there are ways to spoof MAC addresses, but it requires proper equipment and can be somewhat complicated... I am not going to tell you how to do that, since it will be harmful to your University's network and may get you into big legal trouble.

If your University is like many other universities in the country, then they are probably not using smart switch technologies on the dorm network. Instead, what they may have done is placing a firewall and a packet filter between the dorm network and the university network. If this is the case, then you can simply get a router, clone your computer's MAC address on it, and route the connection that way. However, keep in mind, there is a reason for your University to implement MAC address filtering on the network, as plugging routing and switching devices without permission can cause STP instabilities and packet forwarding loops on a network, and depending on the amount of traffic you have coming in and out, the network engineers will probably pick up on the forwarding loops and the spike in traffic from your port and shut you down or even confiscate your router. One way to partially stay below the radar is to properly configure your router and all of its port forwarding settings. Honestly, if I were you, I would wait until I move out of the dorms instead of messing with the University's network, it is not worth getting into trouble over some network violations.

Does your University WiFi reach your dorm?

i had that same exact error coming up on my screen when i tried to get online, but then i just went to the network settings, and made sure that the ip adress was right and all the addresses were right. If that doesnt work choose the easy option when you go to the network settings. it worked after i did that. if non of that works call this number 1-800-345-sony tell them you are having some problems getting online and tell them your situation, they should then run you through some trouble shooting. good luck. i know i got really pissed when that error kept coming on the screen, but when i fixed it i felt such a relief.

Try This

I had the same error.

PS3 firmware was 1.3
DLink firmware was 2.0

In the firewall logs I kept getting an AGL ICMP denied message for port 65535 whenever my playstation threw this error.

I updated my wireless router firmware to 2.1
I am now updating my PS3 firmware to 1.54

Hopefully this will solve the connection problems....at the very least the wireless firmware update will now allow my ps3 to get system updates.

enjoy.
