Using a moniter

I'm thinking of moving the PS3 over to my room. Since I don't have a HDTV in here, I'm hoping to use a monitor since it's smaller and cheaper. That would probably call for a DVI to HDMI cable, but I was wondering about the audio. Would I need to get a stereo system and cables with that? Preferrably, I don't want to get speakers since I don't have the room for it on my desk. Or would I be able to use regular computer speakers for that? Anything else I should be aware of before I start spending money on cables and other hardware?

ya i looked into getting a moniter for my room to use my ps3 on too. just because they are cheaper then the lcd hdtvs. the guys at best buy told me it was possible to do that. using a hdmi to dvi cable. hdmi going into the ps3 and dvi going into the monitor. but then they realized, how the hell would we get sound. because dvi only has visual not audio. so you would see the game but not hear it. if you wanted to hear it you would need to get an hdmi to hdmi monitor. but one problem they dont make those. the only make dvi monitors. so ya. i just bought an lcd hdtv its 20" a and fits perfectly in my room.

Yeah, I figured I'd have to go down that route as well. Which one did you get?

Currently, I have my eye on the Toshiba and Samsung. The Acer Ferrari monitor also has me interested because it has DVI and audio jacks. Currently, I'm leaning towards the Toshiba because it has HDMI, but I think the Samsung may be better with the refresh rates. *shrug*

i went with a toshiba 20" model, i bought it at best buy for i think $600, but we got a deal, i have seen them as high as $800. it is a great HDTV, good picture and looks visually appealing. it is a stainless steal finish, and the base is very small. so it looks nice. but what is really good is the sound quality, it is hdmi to hdmi which also great because tv's at the similar size seemed to be div to hdmi. o shit i just clicked on the toshiba link you put, that is the same one i have, the exact same one. im an idiot trying to describe it to you duhhh. lol. ya i have that one it is great. i would recommend it for sure.

Nice, what features does it have? I'm also thinking of getting a digital cable box as well, so does it have multi inputs?

well for features all i know because i haven't really explored them all that much. it has a nice handle on the top, which actually suits the TV. great for carrying it around or moving it. UMMMMMM like i said the sound is great. you can change the sound options so it is like theater, or hall, flat, memory, again i didnt explore so i dont know what each means, but i have mine on theater and it sounds great. You can use it as a pc monitor as well. the converter is also very nice. very slim, it uses those watch type batteries, so you dont have to change them for like years or something like that. uhhhh. as for the cable box, there is only one hdmi input on the TV, but there are hd component inputs you know the red, green, blue ones. but i dont know if you would buy a HD cable box. if you are you could either use the HD component inputs the ones i told you about or you could just keep switching the hdmi cables from ps3 to bable box. up to you which one you use. so yaa thats pretty much all i know, im only 15 so im not as electronically savee as some people are, but hey im learning. any more questions, illl be happy to answer.

Interesting, thanks for your help. I'm still researching into the market of smaller HDTVs or widescreen monitors since they're much harder to come by.

Oh Canada... I'm currently posting from Mississauga. If you went to the Best Buy PS3 launch party in downtown Toronto, you might've caught me winning my PS3. XD

Hi Charlie, if you want to use a computer monitor as your display, you have to make sure it is HDCP compliant. As for the audio, I think the PS3 have a digital audio output (S/PDIF) in the back. So what you will have to do is go and buy a set of speaker that have a digital input (S/PDIF), some computer speakers have digital input, but most of the 4.1 or 5.1 speakers have them.

So when you connect everything, you want to use a HDMI to DVI cable or adapter to connect the video signal, and then use a S/PDIF cable to connect your PS3 to your speakers, and that should be it.

Thanks for your help. Hmm... going with a monitor, speakers and all those ables might come up to about the price range of buying an HDTV. Would I be able to connect a monitor to a digital cable box? Or would it require even more hardware? Also, I'm thinking of going with headphones instead of getting speakers since I'd probably sit like less than three feet away from the TV. I know, it's probably bad for my eyes...

If your digital cable box have a DVI output then it shouldn't be a problem, if your cable box only have component output, then you will have to use a component to VGA cable or adapter in order to make it work. Like I said, just make sure you get a HDCP compliant monitor if you plan to use a monitor. The monitor and cables solution will be messy but a little cheaper. However, if you can get your hands on a HDTV, then definitely go with the HDTV instead of the monitor / speakers combo.

w00t! I got the Toshiba one and it does look pretty sweet. Too bad regular TV looks so gross, I have to get an HD cable tuner. Oh well, everything else does look a lot better so I think I'll stick with 720p.

Thanks! It feels so good going from a 13" tube to a 20" LCD in the comforts of my room.
