Ok, first off, you will have to bridge the connections between your modem and your ethernet port, to do so, click on your Dial up connection in Network Connections, and then hold CTRL and click on the Local Area Connection so that both Dial Up and Local Area connections are selected, then right click on either connection and click bridge connections. Once you have completed that, you must then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the Dial up connection and Local Area Connection, to do so, right click on the Dial Up connection and go to properties, then click on the advanced tab, click on the check box marked "allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection". After you checked the box, you must then choose the Local Area Connection as the home networking connection. Click on settings button after you have chosen a connection and enable any network services you wish the PS3 to access (Note: in order to access the PS Store, you have to enable at least HTTPS). Finally, with your ICS turned on and connections bridged, you must then use a CAT5 or CAT6 crossover cable to connect your PS3 to your computer. The normal ethernet cable (ie. the one that came with your PS3) will not work, you must get a crossover cable.
To be honest with you, I don't think a dial up connection is even worth messing with on a PS3, the connection speed is going to be extremely slow, and playing online is probably not going to happen (or with tons of lagging), downloading anything from the PS store will probably take days, assuming you have a dedicated phone line for you Internet. The bottom line is, you just can't upload and download the data fast enough with a dial-up connection. You should really look into investing in a Cable or DSL high speed broadband connection rather than networking your dial up connection.

didnt work?
it didnt work i tryed to bridge connections and it says you have to select 2 lan or high speed internet connections that are not being used by internet connection sharing. do you know if i can fix it. im only 17 and i probably wont get high speed until i move out. but i'd appreciate if i can get this figured out.

Did you try to hold CTRL while selecting the second connection? If that does not work, then just enable Internet Connection Sharing on the Modem (Dial-up) connection and share it with the Local Area Connection, use the crossover cable to connect your Windows machine to your PS3. Try that and let me know what happens.

Using the ethernet port, it should be just plug and play. Plug the ethernet cable into your PS3, restart your modem and you should be online. If you're using a router, it gets more complicated, but it depends on your brand of router.

What are you trying to do? Are you trying to use your computer as a source for your internet connection? Are you trying to share files between your computer and your PS3?

Assuming you have more than one source of connection (ie. WiFi and ethernet) and you are using a Windows XP system, you will have to use the Internet connection sharing service to route the Internet connection to your PS3. Please read my previous post for instructions on how to do this...
