Folding@Home Coming March 23rd
From March 23rd Playstation 3 owners will have the ability to help find cures for diseases, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and many cancers.
The folding@Home program will be contained within a new Firmware upgrade scheduled for March 23rd.
The program utilizes the unused processing power of the Cell chip and can be configured to run when your PS3 console is idle.

These simulations can take up to 30 years for a single computer to complete, Folding@home enables this task to be shared among thousands of computers connected via the network ... The Cell/B.E. processor inside each PS3 is roughly 10 times faster than a standard mainstream chip inside a personal computer (PC), so researchers are able to perform the simulations much faster, speeding up the research process.

^But will everybody want to leave there consoles on for so long?
I mean, from what we have heard about overheating...
Is it safe?
I know it is for a good cause, but still...

I don't know. My PS3 gets rather warm just powering up. I was moving my PS3 around a couple days ago, I powered it on, grabbed it and it felt really warm. It got about as warm as my laptop had I left that on for over a couple of hours.

^Hmm.
If that's the case, then I doubt I will bother with this 'folding', however helpful it may be.
Charlie, what is the longest time you have left your PS3 on for? And how hot did it actually get?

I usually don't touch my PS3 when I turn it off since I use the controller. I did touch my PS3 after downloading Wipeout last week because I had to disconnect my PSP. I left the system on for an hour and a half and the system got very hot. At the time, I put my PS3 in the electronic cabinets, standing vertically with the upper shelf about three or four inches higher than the top of the PS3. I could feel the shelf also got really warm as well.
I'm not too worried about overheating since I got a Best Buy warranty, but I don't think it would be safe to leave your PS3 on all day like that. Curing cancer is important, but I don't want to burn my house down... especially given Sony's past experience with batteries that explode into fireballs.

Seriously, does the PS3 really get that hot??? If so, then why haven't Sony put sufficient cooling systems in? It really can't help prolong the life of the system.

Yeah but my point is. How could Sony release something that gets as hot as it apparently does? It's already a very expensive machine and I don't really want to have to spend more money on something that should have been in the system from the start. Poor show from Sony.
I think this is a really good cause, but as other people have stated it wouldn't be worthwhile if it meant risking overheating your PS3, unfortunately.

The PS3 does get pretty hot, but not nearly as hot as the 360, I played the 360 for a few hours over the weekend and it burns my hand when I touch it. You have to leave both the PS3 and the 360 out in the open space so they can ventilate properly, as long as they are not confined in a shelf or cabinet, they should be OK...

Yeah but why did Sony not put sufficient cooling in the first place? It doesn't meant that it has to make the sound of a jet taking off.
My PC stays stone cold no matter how long it's left on and is really very quiet. Sony, you disappoint me....(But I do still love ya)

I think you can only fit but so much in that shiney PS3 case, with a 7 core processor, DDR3 RAM, and a SATA 150 hard drive blazing at such speeds, it is expected for the PS3 to generate tons of heat, and unless if they make the PS3 bigger than it is now, there really isn't many options to keep it stone cold without incurring a significant additional cost... I think it is the same case with the 360.

Same with me sometimes.
Does anyone know the MAXIMUN time that PS3 can be played on before----->meltdown? hehe
I watched a video on youtube, and it like the PS3 version of "Red Ring of Death"...it overheated and wouldnt switch back on.

Point taken and understood
I just worry that it could shorten the lifespan of the machine that's all.
