Playstation 3 20gb model discontinued

Sony have today officially announced their plans to discontinue the 20gb Playstation model.

Speaking to GameDaily BIZ, SCEA's Dave Karraker said that they will no longer be selling the 20GB model of the PlayStation 3 in North America, but instead that they have decided to focus on the 60GB version.

Quote:
Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.
As for Europe and Japan, Europe has only been selling the 60 GB version from the start "and probably took that route after seeing the huge demand we had here in the U.S.," Karraker said. Japan, on the other hand, continues to offer both the 20GB and 60GB, and there's "no word from them on changing their sku mix."

Hmm, the 20GB model must have lost sony a fair amount of money.

And now there are loads of the things sat up in sony studios, never ever to be sold.

I believe this is a smart decision. Seeing as the demand for the 20GB version was so low (I don't know anyone who bought or wants this version), they will be saving a lot of money by stopping production.

I never intended to get a 20GB model because for just $100 more, you can get the 60GB model that offers much more for your money.

^Scion, did you just get confused?

SD is standard definition...HD is high definition.

If you already have HD, then no need to worry!

I don't see why everybody's dropping all this cash on a new tv that doesn't make a heck of a lot of difference in your gaming experience. I mean, the graphics appear amazing on mine, and it's an SD. I'm not about to blow more than you spend on a PS3 just to get a little upgrade in the definition.

Well I don't think it's a "small" upgrade.

Even if it's an extreme comparison...

Sony Bravia 1080p > XXXXXX SDTV 576i :p

However I've got a flat Phillips LCD screen @576i and things look really nice. If I ever have enough money to spare, I might consider buying an HDTV.

HDTV! But uh... Yea about PS3's 20GB being cancelled, i think it was a big mistake to make it in the first place. If they wanted a "lesser" model they should have made something 399.99 to compete with 360. But either way they would lose money so...
