Playstation 3 To Beat The 360's Install Base Within A Year?

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is currently reported to be installed in approximately 8 million homes globally. But despite that huge advantage Eidos Chief Financial Officer Rob Murphy the PS3 will be able to beat that figure within a year.

Speaking to MVC UK, Murphy believes the console will hit these figures by April of next year eaving the market ripe for Eidos' top-line franchises.

Quote:
We have absolutely no doubt that PS3 will be a very successful platform and we’re completely behind it,” said Murphy. “Ideally, we would like to have a market that is a worldwide installed base of eight to ten million PS3 units by the time we bring out our big products. But we’ll have to assess how that moves.
Quote:
We will have some PS3 products over the coming months, but we’re holding back our major top line products until this time next year.

Great to see Eidos's enthusiasm and support for the PS3 especially as other publishers have been taking a back seat on the console, im not too sure about these sales predictions though...

They do sound a bit crazy

I also read that some market analysis guy said unless they start getting more support from movie studios HD-DVD could be dead by summer 2008 (if i can find the article again i'll link it). I think people are getting ahead of themselves

Edit:

this isnt it, but similar;

the one reason i think the ps3 will in the long run out sell 360 is cause alot of people still own ps2 once there able to buy a ps3 system they can play all there older plus some of the great new one

honestly i think that the ps3 will sell a lot more units with ff13 and mgs4, while halo 3 will sell some units, but most people who really really wanted halo 3 have already purchased an x360. i think ps3 numbers will only rise this years with the stellar exclusive games.

I don't think the PS3 will catch up with the 360 that quickly.

Gordie Boy

I would like to ask what the fuss is over hd dvd and blueray , surely if you can fit more stuff onto one disc rather than 2 or 3 then it must be better for saving materials . We keep going on about the environment and the possibility of reducing materials instead of cost then surely it would be an advantage ??? The ps3 is a great machine and it doesnt heat up like the xbox 360

i agree that a year may be a lil bit slim for the ps3 2 catch up, 360 does have a big lead and head start, true ps3 will probably entice ps2 owners to eventually upgrade thus boosting numbers significantly but there are still issues with price and a lot of people out there are unwilling to pay that much, this coupled with the fact that ps2 still continues to kick ass in terms of sales will probably slow down ps3's catch up for a while longer,

however in this time sony have the chance to refine their product and marketing ready to get new buyers onto the brand, things such as the games, the exzclusives but most improtantly online and ps store could all be given a much needed boost

i was a devotee of the PS2 and the brilliant socom series of shooters, but the on-line glitching and just ease of which cheating is done, imo made it near impossible to play and enjoy. make's me reticent to buy a PS3 and Socm 4 when eventually released, as will we still get the cheating and little redress?

i have bought a xb360 s/h and a Gold Mem sub, tbh i have been very satisfied. i think the ability to report cheaters and the fact they can be machine banned helps stop a lot of the stupidity which spoils it for those of us who are pure recreational gamers.

so thinking i'll wait till prices drop, i've been chatting on Xbox live to Canadian and American players, several who have said they were not very impressed with the PS3 build quality, and many looking to sell the PS3 while it has some value. also some have said the rechargeable wireless controller batteries were not designed to be user replaceable. if true, i'd be surprised at this and see it as a major Sony Gaff, no doubt 3rd party solutions will be available in due course.

i did not say there were no issues on the xbox 360, @ 2/3 of the price it's allowed to have some.
.
UK consumers like me will not be able to play their ps2 tiitles on a PAL PS3 machine. there is no 'rumble' on the joypads (big bummer), you can't even change the batteries on the joy pads officially (OMG), you can't even charge them off the machine, so it go's flat you have to leave you PS3 burning away just to charge the joypad (dippy design or what?).

add to the above to the rampant on-line cheating, no access betwen european and American or Canada players, and as yet no blue-ray support and if there ever will be of note? brilliant machine potentially, but what real value is there in owning one just yet?

many are stateing it's like sony has re-invented the betamax format with the PS3, and just look where that well known to be superior, technolgy went.
