As you’re probably aware Quantic Dream is the French developer behind the upcoming franchise Heavy Rain, they also did the amazingly good Fahrenheit (aka Indigo prophecy on the PS2 and Xbox) back in 2005.
What we have here are a couple of videos showing some of the motion capture techniques used for both facial expression, more specifically eye movement and virtual acting. It’s pretty amazing the amount of detail here and if you watch the older tech demo ‘The Casting’ you’ll get a feel at just how wonderful Heavy Rain may be when it’s released on the PS3 later this year (assuming it doesn’t slip).
Heavy Rain is thought to be along similar lines to Fahrenheit (which if you haven’t played, I suggest you do), which also featured a dark noir thriller storyline and mature characterizations (though Heavy Rain will apparently not feature a supernatural storyline).
A poster for Heavy Rain (part of which is seen above) appeared on the Quantic Dream website last year and featured the new tagline of “How far are you prepared to go to save someone you love” along with the subtitle ‘The Origami Killer’. If Heavy Rain is anything like Fahrenheit it will be an absolutely awesome title. Here’s hoping this one gets the initial sales it deserves if that is the case.
