A fairly simple answer, though I’m not talking franchise titles here. I’m talking quirky titles that chances are will never see the light of day, but would make my day if they did. We all must have them, some game you played on the PS2 that completely blew your mind. Sure we can play some of them (backwards compatibility withstanding) on the PS3, but wouldn’t it be nice to see these titles in all their PS3 pumped up glory? New graphics, better sound, maybe a little SixAxis thrown in where needed?
Perhaps it’s just me, but I doubt it. We’ve all—as gamers—been addicted to or fallen in love with games that we realize were perhaps one offs or too quirky to warrant throwing money at another by the developers, therefore making them never likely to grace a next gen (or next next gen) console.
A couple of mine are after the jump, I hope you’ll add your own.
Gregory Horror Show – PS2 2003
Sadly for US gamers Gregory Horror Show was a European and Japanese affair. I still remember the first time I played this title on the PS2, there was a stand out moment when my little character got on tip toes to peek through a keyhole and I was instantly in love. It’s difficult to put into words just how completely bizarre, quirky, adorable, strange Gregory Horror Show is, so I won’t try.
If you like charming games this game had bucket loads. You play a guest in a weird hotel run by Gregory (a sort of cubic demented mouse) and you must make your way around the hotel collecting the souls of its guests. The trick is you had to be sneaky to steal the bottled souls and once you had a guests soul they would want it back, a nice game mechanic for making the game harder as you progressed since more and more guests would want your head on a stick if they saw you.
If Gregory Horror Show were remade for the PS3 I think I would be delirious and probably the first in line to purchase it, I’d pay double, hell probably triple just for the pleasure of playing it again all spangly, fresh and up to date.
You can check out part one of a guys walkthrough, it shows the first part of the game and his commentary is pretty amusing, this shows you what I meant by the weirdness of the game. Superb.
Gitaroo Man – PS2 2002
Oh Gitaroo Man, how you lured me in only to chew me up and spit me out like a sniveling child with no hand eye coordination, you dastardly evil yet addictive piece of software!
For those unfamiliar with the premise—even though I’m sure I am preaching to the choir here—Gitaroo Man was a game by Koei the essentially fell into the rhythm game genre. You played Yuichi a young boy with the power of the Gitaroo! Okay so a Gitaroo is a guitar and it kind of transforms Yuichi into Gitaroo Man, a sort of alter-ego, but whatever, he’s cool!
To play the game you follow a line onscreen with movements on the thumbstick, keeping in time with it whilst also pressing corresponding buttons in similar style to Guitar Hero, only they appear on the line you’re following, so it’s sort of twofold, which will drive you nuts as you progress.
The cool thing about Gitaroo Man, as with Gregory was the charm factor and the fact it was different. Guitar Hero might kick ass now, but Gitaroo Man was the mommy. Now if they’d just release Gitaroo Man on the PS3 all updated, funky songs and of course a SixAxis Guitar Controller with analogue stick where the sound hole is and the PS3 button symbols on the neck like frets and I’d be in Gitaroo Man heaven.
