Criterion Games have reiterated that their recent announcement that Burnout Paradise will support 1080i is not an April’s Fool after all.
In an official blog post today the studio issued a quick explanation of how they came to be able to offer 1080i support for the title. Criterion have found a way to make use of the extra PS3 memory freed up by Sony’s latest SDK in order to scale the 720p game upto 960×1080.* The PS3’s hardware scaler is then used to upscale the image horizontally and output at 1920×1080.
It is believed the new 1080i support will be included in version 1.3 (Cagney update).
