Playstation 3 Stings Sony Profits

Sony today announced that its profit loss was only 5.3% from the prior year. This comes as a shock to many as Bloomberg recently predicted the company would today announce a 50% third-quarter profit loss in comparison to 2005.

It seems that Sony's great Bravia television and digital camera sales, coupled with their strong box office movies last year all helped Sony make a $1.3 billion profit.

These three factors helped Sony keep their head above water these last four months, with the PlayStation 3 has caused a major loss in Sony's profits. The games division reported a $445 million loss, compared to the $557 million profit in 2005.

its to be hope so..

not too clued up on past economics of the games industry, but i do know what the dreamcast did for Sega..

once public confidence is lost, its game over. I truly hope this doesn't happen to Sony..i have blind faith they will swing it round

Exactly, Sony is a huge company with some great minds - i have no doubt they'll bounce back. They've just gotta wait out the 360 and Wii's honeymoon period then people will start to see what the PS3 can really offer.

Thing to remember is that most companies go this way after the launch of a major new peice of hardware. Sony make massive losses on each PS3 sold, and can only make any real money on software. given that the PS3 is not available worldwide yet it stand to reason that it's not making any money for Sony, but things will pick up once it's released in Europe and then we'll all be seeing what our dream machine is really capable of. Things will turn around, it just needs time.

Note to Sony: Get your fingers out of your arses and start plugging the PS3 for all it's worth. Advertising for the PS3 at present is dire and won't be helping your cause one bit.
