In an interview with news site TheAge.com.au, SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim responded to criticism over the PS3's price by stating that;

"We think PS3 is not a product to be compared with Wii, it is a completely different product. This is a digital hub, that is a games console".

He went onto add that, "To maximise Xbox 360, you need Media Centre, you need a PC. And now if you want to play high-definition movies you have to spend another AUD $249 [EUR 150]. Xbox is significantly dearer than PS3 for what it can do straight out of the box."

"We firmly believe that once demonstrated, the price becomes almost insignificant. A Blu-ray player currently is $1500 [EUR 900] and above. Just on the Blu-ray alone, there's value."

Ephraim went on to say that Sony is "hard at work now looking at the manufacturing benefits they can gain to bring the price down over time", adding, "We will do our best to bring the price down as soon as we can."

you know what, people who think the ps3 is expensive are just idiots, and xbox and wii fans can say all they want because they're not getting anything even near what the ps3 offers...the price is fine where its at right now and maybe in a year or so it would be a good idea to start lowering it but honeslty people need to see the deal there getting. you buy an xbox and then you have to buy the online then an hddvd add on and so forth, and with wii...lets not even talk about that garbage, sure its fun for a laugh or two but whats really going to be beneficial in the next 2 or even 4 years.

Sony will cut prices when it makes sense for them. They are in it to make money, not lose it. It is unfortunate that the PS3 is so expensive right now. It is like the PSP situation all over again, people want it but it's too pricey. Sony could move a lot more units if they would do something about the cost of the system. I can just about guarantee that.

i have the ps3, psp, and 360. the 360 is my favorite but havent played it since ive played cod3 online. it has nothing on gears, but its different.
