Blu-Ray Will Help Ensure Success
Sony executive Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz thathe is confident the Blu-Ray format will win the format war predicting in turn boosting sales of the PS3 console.
Speaking from the GDC last week Harrison told GI, "I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture".
"That is a positive factor which will play more into the consumer psyche as the year goes on, as more consumer electronics firms launch standalone disc players, as more Blu-ray disc movies become available, and as more shelf space is dedicated to the category at retail," Harrison said.
"In America, where PS3 disc is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK," he said.

Yeah but he would say that. Don't mean to sound cynical, but PS3 sales speak for themselves.

Sure, Blu-Ray is beating the pants off HD-DVD but that's like winning the special Olympics. DVDs are still more wide spread and continue to outsell every other format hands down.

DVD will be around for a long time to come. It's functional, and, more importantly, it's dirt cheap. It also satisfies most people's needs. I'm only interested in buying Blu-Ray movies once I get a HD TV and I dont know when that will be.

Blu-ray is pounding HD-DVD right now thanks to the PS3 and a wide support from major movie studios. However, a troublesome fact that Phil "forgot" to mention is that the multi-billion dollars porn industry is swaying to support HD-DVD. Also, streamed and downloadable digital media is another strong contender in the next generation format war. HD-DVD and Blu-ray may have both lost, the future may not have room for optical discs at all, but rather downloadable media straight from your living room. As far as DVDs go, sure they are the king of the mountain for this generation, but as more HDTVs roll into consumers living rooms across the world, the next generation is rapidly dawning upon us... Just my 2 cents

Just one thing. I don't really think the PS3 is help too much regarding Blu-Ray winning out over HD DVD. There's more potential HD DVD players on this Earth in the form of Xbox 360 since the PS3 sales have been abysmal. I say potential because as you know the 360 can't play HD DVD out of the box...the shame of it!!
I take your point on the downloading thing though, makes perfect sense.

Actually, PS3 boosted the Blu-ray sales up the roof... Blu-ray was the losing format until November last year. I think Nielsen-VideoScan did a market study at the beginning of this year, and the report of Blu-ray sales is astounding, in January, Blu-ray discs outsold HD-DVD almost 3:1. Check out the Betanews article I have linked below.
http://www.betanews.com/article/Blur...DVD/1172267610
The problem with Microsoft's HD-DVD drive for the 360 is that Microsoft gave the consumers a choice to buy it, where as Sony did not. So naturally, not everyone that owns a Xbox 360 will buy a HD-DVD drive, since most people use the 360 as a game console and not a HD-DVD player. As of end of January, the add-on HD-DVD drive have barely sold 100,000 units, and compared to the 10 million+ units install base of the 360, that is not even 1%. the PS3 sales have been slow, but compared to this add-on drive for the 360... well you get my drift.

So I was at Best Buy today and they had Casino Royale on sale. 2-disc DVD for $20 and BD for $30. There's no reason to buy the new-generation DVDs if they keep releasing regular DVDs. If they really want to win the format wars, they need to first eliminate the old format.

This won't happen for a long time. DVD is cheap and nearly everyone has a player. HDTV's aren't widespread enough right now so people wouldn't benefit from having HD media such as Blu-Ray. HDTV's are rapidly dropping in price though.

Yeah, I agree, it definitely won't happen for a long time. Not until the one format have at least 80% market penetration. If VHS stuck around as long as it did after DVD, then the DVD will stick around even longer, since most of the HD players will be able to play them as a backward compatible feature.
